Ahhhh! House Hunting Woes

Ahhhh! House Hunting Woes

Is anyone looking for houses right now? I am absolutely so confused! I could have bid on any of the houses we say today. It was only our first day and I'm ready. I really need to prioritize! Does anyone feel as overwhelmed as I am?

We're looking but not buying til after the wedding... I hear ya though- it's so overwhelming and you have to know little things like how good are the school districts and how high are the taxes, etc....

But this seems to be a good site:
http://mlsli.com/

Also I've been looking on newsday's real estate site
http://www.newsday.com/classified/realestate/

And Optimum homes:

And even Craigslist isn't bad either...

Re: Ahhhh! House Hunting Woes

We have looked at mlsli.com and are working with a realtor right now. Most houses we saw today were in great condition and the prices were reasonable. We looked mostly in Smithtown and Nesconset. It's just so hard to narrow down the area, type of house, etc right now.

Honestly your best bet is to casually drive around and see the type of house you like. FH and I drove around every weekend and it took us about 6 months to find a house we wanted. We looked at many houses, mostly new construction but at times it was overwhelming other times not. We ended up finding our house by just driving past. Don't get discouraged or overwhelmed. When you least expect it is when you will find it. Good Luck

Think of what type of house will suit your lifestyle. Do you want children? If yes, where are the bedrooms in relation to the master? Are you an outdoorsy type that needs a huge backyard? A chef that has to have a perfect kitchen? If you like to entertain, you'll need a big living room and/or dining room.... you get the idea.

You'll find something, it'll just hit you when you find the right one. Good luck!

Go to lots of open houses to get ideas of the neighborhoods and also you can ask the different realtors questions about the areas.

Not sure where you want to look, but I know of a house in Westbury. FM if you want more info.

Oh yeah... It's frustrating and tiring. FH and I have our own likes and dislikes when we did house hunting but there was one place where both of us agreed on... plus the feeling is different. It's like trying on your wedding dress. You just kept coming back to the 'ONE' thing.

Maybe this will help you... here are some things to consider when choosing a house:
- location (is it a safe area?)
- mass transportation (how far is it from the city)
- flood area or not?
- size (if it's the same price to the one next door which is much bigger then why get the smaller space?)
- closet space (sorry, FH is worse than I. His cloths are overpouring!)
- Parking

Re: Ahhhh! House Hunting Woes

we were thinking of selling our house for awhile, but we changed our mind b/c it's just not a good market. but we looked. what we did was go on mlsli.com and went to open houses where we wanted to look. we didn't get involved with a realtor b/c they don't leave you alone. (no offense to any realtors out there) but if you go and see houses you can make a list of things you defintely do want and don't want. make sure you consider school districts when you're looking.

hope this helps!

I hear ya! We put a bid on a house last week and already we had to up our bid! It's very frustrating but if it's meant to be it will...otherwise there is something bigger and better out there for you! We are looking in Massapequa Park, Seaford, Wantagh, Merrick, So.Bellmore and Oceanside (all very good school districts which is our main priority)!!! Good luck to you!

We are in contract on a house right now and it's very overwhelming, especially when you are trying to plan a wedding!

We like so many areas but are concentrating now in Nesconset, St. James and Smithtown. That seems to be where we can find the style we want at the price we want. We really are open to anywhere though. I really love the capes.

We just started looking and will only buy now, if it makes sense. We looked at a bunch in Massapeaqua Park, we really liked one. Although we decided that we don't want to live that far from where we are now. FH wants to live closer to the hub train station.

We looked in Glen Cove yesterday and the homes we saw were AWFUL!!! They would both need to be gutted.

We're looking again this weekend, but it's so fustrating I don't want to buy just to buy,... we both hope to buy before the wedding.

We're torn... Split is our favorite, and I like Colonial as a 2nd favorite and he likes contemperary as his 2nd favorite

Where in Westbury? Which SD zone? Westbury? Carle Place? Jericho? East Meadow?

Re: Ahhhh! House Hunting Woes

We are starting to look also. We would love to buy one right now but I don't know if that's the greatest idea. We're saving for the wedding and saving for a house. I think I'd rather wait to right after the wedding to look- that way we have no wedding savings to worry about and we can add the wedding gift money into our house savings fund.

Do any of you worry about these things too? FH thinks we should just buy a house and worry about everything later- lol. I hope this isnt too personal but are you all trying to put 10% down on a house or 20%??? And are you more interested in a house that is a little more money but needs minimal fixing up or a low costing home with more home improvements?

Re: Ahhhh! House Hunting Woes

We are also focusing on Massapequa Park and Babylon Village. I would love to move even further out east-you can get a really beautiful home for less (in some cases) but FH commutes to city and refuses to move further than Babylon Village. We like the SD in both those towns and LOVE the whole little village look. It would be nice to be able to walk into town for dinner and for him to be able to walk to the train.
