Those of you who have had your alterations on your gowns done...how much did you spend? I'm trying to figure out if I should go to Davids Bridal and let them do it, or find an outside seamstress to do the alterations. Any advice?

Re: Alteration Costs
There are places you can go to have alterations done, even if you didnt get the dress there. At least, thats what I have heard, and I am hoping, since i got mine in FL

I've heard bad things about alterations at David's,and they definitely are overpriced. I would look for an independent seamstress.

I would find a good outside seamstress. The way your dress fits and how the fabric is treated is just too important to risk. I don't know anything about the tailors at David's Bridal but I would think you can do just as good if not better somewhere else. What about the place where you bought your dress?

you might be better off shopping around... ask the people at David's what they would do for your dress and then take it to a couple of other places for price quotes.

I am not sure about price, but i have heard from more than 3 people that the seamstress at Princess Bridals in Farmingdale is very good.

Re: Alteration Costs
A 'bridal consultant' told me they typically cost 10-15% of your dress cost.

I would LOVE that. I Spent $549 on my dress. so 10% would be $55 and 15% would be $83.
The thing is, I bought my dress at David's because of the deal I got and the deals my BM's will get. I bought it sooner, rather than later, but I'm HOPING to be atleast 20lbs lighter by the wedding. David's says they can alter the dress up to 2 sizes, so I'm assuming anyone else will be able to do the same.
Thanks for all your suggestions. I've got another month or 2 before I need to go for my first fitting.
My alterations were $350 - for BASIC alterations at RK Bridal. It was complete bs considering my bustle broke immediately, and the only other things she did were the hem and let the waist out half an inch.
If possible, I would go elsewhere to have your alterations done - my friend had an awful experience with David's Bridal's alterations dept.

Re: Alteration Costs
If you bought your dress at David's, they did say that they would press your dress at no cost - either before alterations if you do not get them done there, or after they alter it. How much is a typical pressing for the dress? Maybe if David's is overpriced, the pressing may help offset that, depending, of course, how much that is. Is it even a lot?
