Would you be offended if there would be two endings to a wedding?. FH and I are having the last hour of the wedding to be.. let's just say heavy metal hour. We know it will freak people out so we are telling them about it in the invitations. That way they can leave before the hour and everyone can have their way. Offensive or not?

Re: Alternative Hour
Thank it's a cool idea... I just wouldn't put it on the invites. I would announce it a hour or two before.

Re: Alternative Hour
It's not actually going to be on the invitations. It's going to be an insert to the invitations. If we tell them the day of the wedding it will seem like thanks for coming.. now get out. :. We figured it will give them a heads up, so they wouldn't be surprised and can plan appropriately

Re: Alternative Hour
Interesting idea. I have mixed feelings about it. I love the idea and I would love to do that myself. And my wedding is MY day and I love heavy metal. But IMHO, I feel like part of throwing a party is making sure the guests have fun too, and if most guests don't like it, then I don't know if i would do it. Like I said, I have mixed feelings.

Re: Alternative Hour
I wouldn't do it just because I wouldn't want to encourage people to leave early. I'm inviting who I am because I want those people around me on my day, and to me, that is more important than an hour of music. But that's just an opinion and I am in no way saying that you don't think your guests are important. It's sad that I have to clarify that but I don't want people jumping down my throat.
All that being said - I do think it's a pretty cool idea and definitly adds a personal touch.

Re: Alternative Hour
Sorry...I voted 'completely inappropriate'...
I LOVE Heavy Metal or (Alternative Music)...which is why I clicked on the thread to begin with...
Unfortunately...I don't think its the place for it. I will be adding as much Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Tool, Nirvana, STP, Smashing Pumpkins, Blind Melon...etc....that I can squeeze into our wedding...I'm thinking intro's...between courses...cake cutting...garter/bouquet...etc....
Well...thats my 2 cents...I will say...If I was at your wedding...I wouldn't leave...
Good luck!!!

Re: Alternative Hour
I am into brutal death metal, grindcore, goth, industrial/darkwave, etc and fh is into a thrash metal and hardcore so we both have VERY distinct tastes. We even have people who are in bands from the local scene attending our wedding (we would have liked to invite more but our list was too big) BUT what we realize it is like having a dinner party you need to have a balance of music.
So what we did was for the ceremony - its all irish folk and atmospheric goth/darkwave for the cocktail hour it does have metal music but its more light/instrumental mixed in with more folk, irish (theme of the wedding), great goth ballad songs etc.
The little pieces of the reception though is balls out. Our entrance and bp entrance is misfits, slayer (something we both can agree on), the bq toss is going to be internal bleeding or skinless ( I couldn't do devourment or eyehategod or happy face because it maybe too much and less groovey chunky death metal), and at the end of the night we are playing a gwar song since fh and i loved gwar when we grew up.
So you can still have your music but not make guests want to leave. Plus there is always the after party which fh and i have and that is all our music.

The fact that Gwar was just mentioned on a wedding planning site in a possitve manner just made me smile.

Re: Alternative Hour
personally I love the personal touches, but I'm not sure how this would actually go over... I know in my family that wouldn't go over well at all, but if you think alot of people will still stay that would be cool, but if only a few people are sticking around I wouldn't cut my reception short for a couple songs ya know?
I'm sure all of us don't have things like the electric slide on our must plays, but if it makes our guests happy then so be it!

Re: Alternative Hour
I'm sorry - I voted completely inappropriate too.. .
I think its a nice idea to add a personal touch - and I think there are plenty of ways you can do that throughout the wedding. . .like how someone mentioned earlier about entrances and bo-k / garter tosses. . . but to be honest, i would be kind of turned off if I saw something in my invitation suggesting that you plan on playing music that might make me want to leave - and I'm SURE you would put it much more eloquently than that, but I think that is the bottom line.
I would find ways to incorporate it into my wedding, but I would really want all my guests to stay for the entire reception. After all, that is why I invited them!
That being said, its your day, do it your way Do whatever makes you and FH happy!!!!

Re: Alternative Hour
I think its nice that you want to include something for you, your interests etc...
but if i went to a wedding that the last hour they started playing that type of music, i would prob call it a night and go home. although i like some of that music i can only take so much of it. I just dont think its the place for that kind of music. this is not to say that you can play some, i can def understand if someone wanted to mix a few pieces in but not a full hour. Plus you want to keep peopl eon the dance floor.. can you dance to that music?

Re: Alternative Hour
I guess I need to explain. You all know we all have to do things for everyone else ' to make them happy'. My fh and I wanted one hour out of the five hours to play the music we enjoy . Now at least 30-40 people will be staying for this one hour (and all of us hanging out at the bar afterward. The rest of the people have been complaining that it is such a long trip to the wedding (45 minutes) and to be honest will probably appreciate leaving a little earlier. Anyone that wants to stay can, they just might not like what they hear. We figured one hour for us to have what we want isn't too wrong since everyone keeps telling us what we have to 'have'.
This is what I am thinking as an insert
We hope you will join us for this special day. There will be something a little different in the official last hour of the wedding. We enjoy an alternative type of music (that is harder than typical wedding music), and from 5-6 p.m we will be showcasing that. We recognize that this music is not suitable for everyone, so we will be having two endings to our wedding. The official wedding will run from 12:30- to 4:30, and from 5-6 we will have our heavier music, so as to not offend.
We appreciate everyone’s understanding regarding this, and hope to see you there.
Any better girls?

You'll quickly learn that the wedding is supposed to be about you & FH....not anyone else.... We're playing a lot of songs that are going to make people stop.... I really, really, really wanted a NIN song as our first dance....instead - we made the DJ promise he'll play it for us...

Re: Alternative Hour
i love it but i wouldnt put it on the invite b/c it doesnt belong there. maybe, MAYBe on a reception card but announcing at reception is the best way.
i.e. cocktail hour starts at 7pm dinner and dancing reception starts at 8pm Headbangers hour starts at 11pm
personally i think it may be chaos lol

Re: Alternative Hour
Honestly i think its fine ( i should of clarified that in my last response). Actually I have gone to a wedding that was NYC Goth (she was miss nyc goth and he was a dj) so the entire wedding was completely goth darkwave and the older generation did leave early for the really darker stuff was played but in the end peopel need to realize it is ' our ' wedding and if your paying for it you play whatever you want especially if your just doing an hour.
your note was amazing! If your just doing the inviation I would just do a seperate card since it might be too 'wordy' for the invite since your limited on space typically.
