Am I Crazy???

Am I Crazy???

I went dress shopping again yesterday, and went back to try on a dress i loved the first time, and also my mom like alot too. It is a lot less then i planned on spending on a dress, but i feel like i can tell its not real silk or satin. Its kinda rough material. But i thought i could live with that, cause the fit was amazing.

But then I made sure to check the label, wich i have done on every single dress ive liked so far to make sure its made in USA. and it was made in China a huge deal breaker for me.

I know alot of things are made out of the country, but this is such a huge purchase and my wedding gown, and it absolutely kills me to think that some little 5 year old made my dress for 11 cents an hour.

So when i pointed this out to the salesgirl, she tried to tell me that all dresses are made in china regardless of what the labels say, but then i was thinking, couldnt the designers get in big trouble for lying on their labels????

Does this bother anyone? or am i alone on this?

Nicole... You carry a Louis Vuitton bag(s) right?

Guess where that's made... ding ding ding, China!!!

I wouldn't worry about where it's actually made. If the fit is amazing and you love the dress than it shouldn't matter where it was made.

thats not true, all dresses are not made in china...If you get a brand that makes tons of 1 type of dress then maybe but that is not true.

And then if its couture it has to be 85% handmade, so its not done in factories

Yeah alot of them are being made now in the USA, they have a manufacturer here, also think it has to do with the fact that marc jacobs designs them.

I was misinformed.... Regardless though, most of the shiit we use comes from somewhere else. It's a dress you'll only wear once and I'm sure it's amazing quality.... but go with your gut.

actually - this is what they told me when i went to italy also.

all the tags said 'made in italy' so my mom was like WOW we have to get a dress here. and the woman actually told us that with these dresses they are only ASSEMBLED in italy - that all the lace work and detail is put together in china and then the final assembly is done in italy so that way they can put a MADE IN ITALY tag on it ( which cracked me up bc most of them actually said it in english)

She told us if the dresses were made entirely in italy they would be thousands of dollars more.

i wouldn't worry about it - as long as it makes you feel beautiful

Whats more important to you, the beautiful dress, or the slight chance that its made by a child for 11cents an hour?

If you wanted to get a dress that came strictly from US or Italy, France etc... youll be shelling out thousands of dollars......$$$$$$

Your wedding dress should be something nyou fall in love with regardless of anything, where its made, what its made of, or if its a paper bag from A&P.

Whatever you buy, its probably passed thru China, and not necessarily stitched by some kid, but passed thru an assembly plant to have on or 2 things stitched on by machine.

alot of brands do this, for wedding dresses or otherwise.

Depending on the designer, what type of clothing company they are and everything.

Nicole-i dont know what to tell you, i mean you have to wear it so you have to be comfortable with it...But like it was mentioned earlier, there are definitely tons of things youhave made in china, and thats a guarantee...Here is a little something ill tell you that I saw on 20/20 once and i was shocked at how differently i was able to look at things after:

They did a special on sweat shops. Well they showed a bunch of young college kids protesting and other groups too and they also had a group of people who wanted these protestors to stop and youknow who they were, it wa the sweat shop workers themselves...Here is why: ok to us the amount of money they make is very little yes, but to them believe it or not it is the highest paid jobs in their country that is available to them. Some of them have the option of working for $3 an hour or working out on the field doing harder work for less than that. These people get happy when they have big companies setting up there. They also showed how in India because of all the protests and everything they fired all the young girls, such as age 10, 11, 12 and so on, well guess what happened to those girls once they lost those jobs, they became prostitutes.

They said how american people are very naive and its a bunch of rich snobby preppy kids who go and protest when they have no concept of what their life is like. They were upset bc places were closing down in their countries and they were losing out on good jobs.

Theres alot more to the story but i think i made the important points

That is an excellent point you bring up denise. We tend to forget that cultures are so different than our own.

I would say if you truly believe that a child made your dress and it would bother you to wear it... I would get a dress made else where! you want to be happy with your purchase.
After all it IS an investment

thank you...yeah their government, lifestyle everything is different. We cant compare it to ours

Re: Am I Crazy???

i agree, if it will bother you that much I wouldn't get it.

You were planning on getting a couture gown, so i guess stick with that
jessica08bride Posted:

Re: Am I Crazy???

Yeah like Denise said, a lot of tags are not what they seem to be. I work for a furniture company and our chairs aren't 100% leather but we are able to write leather on the chair anyway if a certain amount of real leather is on it. It's not against the law and done all over the place. Our stuff is bought from China too and we have lots of audits and government officials going into the factories to make sure child labor is NOT happening. I can't speak for dress manufacturers but generally, they try to prohibit the child labor thing over the country.

I'd say, if you're really uncomfortable with it, don't buy it. I'd want to feel 100% in my dress. you'll find another one.....

im all for american products (everyone in my house drives an american car!!)

But... my grandma was a seamstress (making dresses) and made crap for money (not 11 cents an hour but pretty bad) , she only stopped about 10 years ago (maybe less) so its not just the sweat shops in China!

From what I understand, this is true. They depend on that 11 cents...
It may not be right that the pay is low and the working conditions have no excuse to be bad - but they need those jobs to survive. they need money and for many its the best job they can find. I have not done extensive research on the topic though and not 100% positive but i am pretty sure I learned this in some social work course somewhere along the way.

so true! my mom was a seamstress. she worked in a sweatshop in QUEENS. no air conditioning, no heat - terrible conditions. She had to leave a few years ago bc she got ulcers from the owner screaming at her - but she worked there for about TWENTY years!!

and we are only allowed to buy american in my house LOL
