We got my e-ring at the same place we are getting my wedding band. I'm supposed to go pick up the band this week and they offered to condition my e-ring to make it look like new for the wedding.
They said I would have to leave it there for an hour. I'm nervous to do this. Is there anything to worry about or am I just paranoid?

Re: Am I just paranoid?
I had to have my diamond set inside a new setting because the 1st setting, kept losing some of its pave stones, so I had to leave it over night. I didn't want to but it was fine. I don't think any jeweler wants a reputation of losing someones ring, or having something wrong happen. I think it will be fine.
not sure...i went back to our jewely to get a side stone added to my ring because i bashed it and lost one. they did it for me while i watched constantly making sure i kept my eye on the center stone and ring the whole time...I am just paranoid. If you do leave it they should have yu look at it under the huge screen so you see all the imperfections and now that its the same one you get back when you pick it up...

when they dipped my e-ring and tightened it before the wedding, they told me i can stay in the back where they do it and watch. So thats what i did.

i bought my wedding band at a different place from where DH bought my e-ring. they offered to clean my e-ring and let me go in the back room (employees only) and watch the guy do it so i could be sure nothing happened to it -- not because he was worried, but for my own peace of mind. maybe you can ask?

theres been rumors that some jewelers switch the diamond and do other shady things, i think thats why some girls are scared

I wouldn't feel right about leaving my ring alone anywhere either. When my mother got her ring re-set she made them do it in front of her. You have the right to be paranoid!

Personally, I wouldnt leave it. I had my diamond reset and I sat with the jewler for an hour while he reset the ring. Dont get me wrong, I dont have a 5ct diamond but I am still skeptical and I heard about some stories where they switch the diamods. Unless its someone you know - personally, I wouldnt do it.

Yea, I heard about this from Macy's when I went to get my diamond appraised. One girl went there and the diamond that was in her ring did not match the gia cert!! - the jewler swapped her diamond!

I know at the jewler I went to they actually will not let you leave the ring. They make you watch it no matter what happens. I don't think it would be a big deal to leave it but if I were you I would make sure you looked it over before and after and make sure that it is 'your' ring. Make sure the diamonds are all the same and were not swapped etc.

Wow I never thought about this you guys! I was planning on taking my ring to London Jewelers in Glen Cove to have it appraised and re-sized. They said I would have to leave it for a week! I really didn't even think that was so weird. Now it seems crazy to me! Sorry to hijack, but can anyone recommend a place to have a ring sized smaller and appraised where you don't have to leave it, or can watch?

Go to Genaro Jewlers in Bellmore. They will size it and appraise it in front of you. Call them for an appointment, but I am pretty sure you can just walk in... thats what i did. I know the owner and he is great

also to add on to my last post.. I am pretty sure that if you go to any jewler and tell them you do not want to leave it they should do it in front of you. I know alot give you the option.

Re: Am I just paranoid?
DO NOT LEAVE YOUR RING ANYWHERE!! You are absolutely not being paranoid. I got my engagement ring made with relatively large side-stones from a ring my dad had given my mom. When FH and I went to talk to them about it, they assured us we would be able to watch the entire thing. Then FH went back himself with my parents ring, so they could take the diamonds out of that one, and put it in the new setting.
Now, I wasn't there, and FH isn't as demanding as me, but when they told him that he couldn't go into the room with them, he knew something was up, and called me. I told him under NO circumstances was he to leave that ring with them.
Well.
After over an hour of fighting (and if I was there, I would have walked right out, but I heard this after the fact), they finally reluctantly relented and let him come down to watch. Guess what happened?
The setting they had made interestingly had side prong settings that were much smaller than the diamonds we have. The owners were saying 'Oh, no, it just looks like that. It's fine.' Of course, the jeweler, a nice guy who barely spoke any english, (and who I don't believe had anything to do with this whole thing) realized right away that the stones wouldn't fit. They tried to jam them in there, and of course, no go.
I firmly believe that they made a ring for smaller stones, and were planning on switching the side stones I have for smaller ones. Why else would the prongs have been so small? Why else would they not allow FH in there to watch??
Eventually, I'm ashamed to say, we went back (I took a day off work) and watched them make a brand new one. At that point, I just wanted it done, and the price they gave us was ridiculously low. I guess because they planned on stealing the stones. But after all that, I love my ring, and it was very special watching it being made by hand with my FH.
Please listen- do NOT leave your ring with ANYONE. And if they make you feel wierd about insisting to be there, than they are untrustworthy. It is commonplace in the jewelry business.
And DEFINITELY go to Gennaro's in Bellmore- that is good advice. They do NOT kid around there- they hold your ring up in the air when they are walking around the store, so it is never out of your sight. They have been recommended to me by a lot of ladies, so I will go there from now on. I went for my appraisal, and was very happy.
Good luck!
And just to assuage any nerves, the shady jeweler is in Philadelphia, so nothing for you ladies to worry about.

Re: Am I just paranoid?
Wow - I never ever would have had any thoughts about this. My ring was made by a friend of a friend, who is now our friend - and he had my stone once for weeks when he reset it into a platinum band. I never once wondered if he was going to do something shady with it, but I trust him.
Another good jewelry store to go to is Good Ol Gold in Massapequa. I've been to them a few times and tons of girls on here have recommended them to me and others a cajillion times.
