am I overreacting? (long, sorry)

Original post by Kris0703

ok, I need your advice bc FH keeps telling me that I'm overreacting. Here's the situation... FH and I have been engaged for 3 1/2 years. We recently, about 6 months ago, finally decided we were ready (financially) to start planning the wedding. We are still kinda young and have to pay for EVERYTHING ourselves. Anyway, so in the mist of us looking around for RH's - FBIL gets engaged. I was so happy and thought that it was going to be fun planning our weddings together. But, it hasn't. FSIL is pretty young and is the first in her family and friends to get married, so she doesn't know much about weddings. I've tired to help by telling her my thoughts and ideas for my own wedding, but now I'm getting frustrated.
First, FH and I book a day and RH. a week later, she books a day a month after ours - which I was okay with until she made it clear that she was actually annoyed at us for booking our date in the summer when she wanted the summer, (ps since I've known her she always said she wanted a fall wedding). Then she tells her even younger sister (MOH) that she has to plan the BP and shower around my dates, so I have her keep asking me when mine is going to be. I have no idea!! It's a year away!! They want me to tell them or they are just going to plan it. Whatever! And now, we both ordered STD's, we talked about this two weeks ago, that she was going to wait another month or two bc it was too early and to let her know when I send mine out. This would make sense since my wedding is first and her's is still over a year away (08/08). I get the mail the other day and guess what's there.... yup, her STD's. I just feel like she's rushing to do things before me. Am I taking it to far?? I have no problem having our weddings close, but isn't it just common curiosity to understand that since FH is older, we have been engaged longer and our wedding is first that she should allow me to do things like this first? I'm not sure if I'm overreacting, but I just get the sense that she's not happy that our wedding is first, so she's doing everything before me. P.s. - she already picked out invitations, I'm sure those would go out well before mine as well. What do I do here??

I think you have a right to be frustrated and annoyed but I honeslty dont think theres much you can do. Shes in a competition with you and I wouldnt make your wedding a competition with her. If shes gonna rush through her planning just to be done with stuff before you, how much is she really enjoying? I would do things when you're ready regardless of her. Its your wedding and you shoudl enjoy every minute of the planning.

I wouldn't tell her details of your wedding at all. Let her make her own plans. Do your invites and all at your pace. People will think she is strange when they get hers before yours and yours is first.

follow ur own scheduel & hopefully she'll realize it's not a competition. to outsiders, she'll only look like the immature princess being that people know the situation!

It must be really frustrating. But you have to focus on your and your fh and try to put her out of all of this. For the two of you, its not about anything else or competition or anything. I would keep your own planning to yourself as much as you possibly can. Try not to play into her competitiveness. Its so sad, bc this is about marriage and this whole situation is really just petty things in the grand scheme.

However, it does sound like youre playing into it a bit by saying that bc fh is older, you should have first dibs on everything essentially, that you should be able to pick things out first. Disregard her timeline of activities, do it at you and fh's own pace. Or this whole thing will drive you crazy!

Best of luck.

Don't go yourself all worked up on her wedding. Don't get sidetracked by what's she doing. If so, you will not be able to concentrate on yours.

I can totally understand why you're upset, men don't get it! I would keep going with your schedule and ignore her. It sounds like she's going to do what she wants no matter what. Just keep things civil, she will be family, and keep going with your plans! Good luck!

Just plan your wedding how you want to. The more you act as if it doesnt bother and the more you focus on your own, the less 'fun' and competitive it will be for you.

Also, its just the beginning and you're both excited but let some time pass by and things will cool down.

Hope this helps. Dont fret!
