Am I wrong? Bridal Center problem (Long)

Before I got engaged I was carrying a picture of a bridal gown around with me for about 2 years. I got engaged on Sept 8. I decided to look at dresses even though we set our date for March 2003. I knew my dream dress was discontinued but I was hoping to find something similar. Well, I walked into Lynbrook Bridal Center and found a of-the-rack sample discontinued gown that was almost like the one in the picture. I was so happy. My mom was with me and I tried it on and she started crying. I got the dress for 1/2 price, but I had to purchase it . It was too small but they are going to add material and hold it for a year and a half. I left a $600 deposit and they capped the alterations at $200. That was a few weeks ago. Well, my best friend from upstate came to visit me this weekend and I wanted her to see the dress. I asked the salesperson if I could see the dress. She brought it out, and I aked her if I could try it on to show my friend. There was no one else trying dresses on. She told me: ' No, it is store policy...you can have your friend come back when you have your fitting. But I wanted to try it on and she came all that way and I paid for it....the woman would not let me so I left the store. The salesperson that helped me when I purchased the gown was so nice. She wasn`t there when I went this weekend. It seems now that Lynbrook Bridal center has my money, things have changed. Am I wrong to feel this way??

I don't know if this story is exactly the same... My sister was supposed to meet my mom and me while I was dress hopping...she lost her directions and didn't make it. I bought the dress then. When we went back to my moms house we called my sister and the 3 of us went back down...She was trying on BM dresses, but they also let me try on my dress again for my sister and she had a digital camera...We were the only people in the store.

A possible explanation

I'm not defending bridal salons but I think there's a logical explanation to all this. Since you bought the dress off the rack, if the salon keeps the dress in their property, they're responsible for anything that happens to that dress - getting dirty, snagged, etc. I believe since your wedding isn't until 2003, they don't want to take any chances. Of course if something happens while you're fitting, that's a different story. If you ordered a dress from a salon, they'll allow you to return to the shop and try on their sample/display. It won't be the actual dress you're buying. So if anything happens, it's just a sample. Do a search on and see if any of the other brides-to-be had any problem with this particular salon. Hope this helps..Good luck!

Did you get your dress at Lynbrook Bridal Center? I just don`t know if it is store policy for all bridal gown shops, that once you pay for your dress you can not try it on again... and since I had to buy the sample so far in advance or risk the gown being sold to someone else... they have my money so I didn't think it would be a problem.

A possible explanation

The dress already had a few things that needed to be fixed and they were going to rebuild the top to make it bigger so it fit me. Maria J, you are probably right. Thanks, I feel much better. They probably didn't want to ruin it.

A similar thing happened to me

I must've tried on a hundred dresses before finally deciding on the gown that I purchased. Call me crazy, but the next day I COULD NOT remember what the dress looked like. I went back with my sister, who had never seen the dress and asked to see the dress. Well, they bring this dress to me and I was CONVINCED that it was the wrong dress. I HATED it. The saleslady kept telling me that it was my dress and on the verge of tears, I said, 'well, please let me try it on. Maybe it will ring a bell...' she said NO (meanwhile this dress was like $1800). apparently, somebody else bought it off the rack and it was going to be sent away to be repaired. So, if it consoles you any, 1) you're not alone and 2) this must be store policy because this was at Adrienne's in Islip.

I have never heard of this before

It sounds like a very 'fishy' policy if you ask me. If you pay for a gown, you can try it on when you want. It is YOUR property. I would call the store manager and complain. That women should have allowed you to try the dress on for your sister. I think she was afraid that your sister might not like the dress and then you would want your $$ back. I see no other reason for this rude behavior. Bridal Centers are not known for their good service.

A possible explanation

Is there any possible way you can get your money back? That's an awful lot of money for something that has to me altered so drastically and the wedding is over a year away. I found a beautiful brand new ordered Mori Lee gown that I loved with headpiece the total price was $800...
