He can't fall asleep with the light on, so when he is home, I use this itty bitty booklight thing that attaches to my book so I can still read while he falls asleep. I have a bad habit of leaving the little booklight on the floor, even after he has asked me numerous times to pick it up and put it away. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.
This morning he stepped on it and broke it (accidentally because I left it out again). I told him he needs to buy me a new one. He says no, he has no intention of replacing it because he had asked me repeatedly to put it away as it was a hazard. The argument escalated into me telling him he doesn't respect me and my things and him saying I don't respect his wishes and put things away when he asks me.
My boss, King Solomon, says we should compromise and pay for it out of our shared account or each pay half as a compromise since we are both wrong. Am I wrong to be hurt and upset? Am I making a too-big deal out of a $29.99 booklight?

Firstly, I think YOU compromise every night by using the itty bitty light so that he can be comfortable, thus making yourself UNcomfortable.
It was an accident and neither is to blame, I think.
Don't make too big of an issue. I would just go buy a new light and then both of you should make a point to be more cognizant of it.

I would just buya new one, because if it was put away then it couldn't have gotten broken, and if you could have accidently stepped onit. Now if he had stepped on it on purpose then I would make him pay for it.

You guys are right. I just needed to hear from someone else that I was being unreasonable or was entitled to a new one. And I think yu guys all agree that there's no sense in going to War over it.
Thanks!

I think its wrong that there is even a discussion of who pays. You are living together and getting married. Your money and his money are one in the same to me.

My Mom once gave me this advise... and it's the best I've ever heard.... 'Pick and choose your wars'
Don't sweat the small stuff, although upsetting it broke, it sounds like an accident. (If he broke it intentionally, different story.)
How you guys handle your $$ is your private business

I agree-no one is to really blame so just bite the bullet and buy a new one. This is the hardest thing that I'm getting used to with FH is the OUR MONEY thing. I'm so used to having my own money. Now everytime we need something I'll be like 'well I just did the food shopping last week so it's your turn to buy' and FH is like 'but it's our money, it doesn't matter who pays when'. I'm slowly getting used to it.
