There was a huge pro life march on washington yesterday. I have to say I really resent some of the language the right is using in this debate
There was a rabbi who was comapring abortion with homosexuality
and people kept talking about what abortion did to them, as if abortion is an entity unto itself, like a monster
Other language I did't like was comparing abortion to the state actually killing people. It completely takes the responsibility away from people. I honestly couldn;t march either for or against legal abortion. I don't think that's the issue. No one WANTS people to have abortions. if people didn't want or need abortions legality would be irrelevent.
Oh and 'feminist pro-abortionists' they kept referring to feminism as this evil... feminism doens;t begin and end with abortion, and it's scary to think that because then the pro life movement can just disregard all of feminism>
People were also saying that the right to privacy was invented and is not guaranteed by the constitution
Thoughts?

UMMMM - Does anybody else think that maybe this is a bit too heavy for LIW - even in NWR?
As soon as someone posts about religion, sexuality, politics, and abortion, a brawl is not too far behind - JMO - I posted at first, and then was getting worried at where this whole thread was going!!!
Once upon a time they had very healthy debates on these subjects on LIW. Then a time came where these same debates lead to bitter, ugly, nasty brawls which lead to the creation of the Off-Topic board as I'm sure the OP remembers. Although people on this thread CLEARLY disagree, I don't think it's gotten out of hand at all so long as no one makes personal attacks. JMO.

When my friend lost her twins and she was 3 months pregnant - they were not fetuses to me-I cried. Did my friend want twins-probably not-but that didn't make them any less human. For some reason I feel that as a human being I have not only a responsibility to take care of myself and my own - but to also give something back, to protect those who need it. To help those who cannot help themselves-babies.
It is sad that there are children who have no home, but that doesn't make me wish they were dead, I am sure they don't wish they were dead either-that is a terrible thing to say. Women have a choice - my sil adopted a baby from a mother who chose life for her daughter - this mother was 22-from a good home-already had a child-but couldn't afford another. She Chose to give life, there are options.
I'm sorry your friend miscarried. Regardless of the fact that she may have not wanted two babies at once, she still probably wanted those babies. If you want to give back to those who can't help themselves, there are plenty elementary school-aged children who can't protect or provide for themselves either.
Let's look at all the 'babies' who were aborted last year in the US alone. The number given was rather high - I believe that the post said the total was upwards of 16,000.
So now, let's hypothetically outlaw abortion. Assuming that these women don't just get the operation in an alley somewhere, that's a LOT OF BABIES. 16,000 Babies that now need homes, because they're clearly not staying with their biological mothers, right? We can't even find homes for that many DOGS.

16000 is only the babies that were aborted after the 20th week, it is more like 160,000. In the US alone.
Edited: Please remember that chances are the majority of this 'late term abortions' (which is not what this post is about) were probably acted out because the mothers life was in danger or severe birth defects.

OK, I wasn't sure about that part. That only makes it worse.
16000 is equal to 1% of all abortions done in the US every year. So by my math (multiply by 100) that brings the grand total to 1.6 million. I'm doing this on paper so it's possible that I'm wrong, but 16,000 is a high enough number, isn't it?
Who is going to take care of these children? I'm not saying they deserve to die, but I'm saying that they certainly don't deserve the kind of life awaiting them.

with close to 300 million people in American
that's 0.000054%
160,000 / 50 states- is 3200 per state
it's really not a large number in compared to the population
edited- no way is that number right- way to small

it's still not 1 percent of the population
.0034%
that's 1 million kids who didn't end up like Nixzmary
sad but true- the real world is not a nice place

No, it's 1% of the ABORTIONS that is 16,000, not 1% of the Population.
But still, that number is too high. The US cannot possibly take care of 16000 unwanted children, let alone 1 MILLION unwanted children.
I completely agree, 1 million fewer Nixmarys is a good thing.

I agree, I would rather someone have an abortion than have a baby that they are not willing, able to care for. JMHO

Re: Anniversary of Roe v Wade
Is abortion right? No. Is it wrong? No. The only person who can answer this is the person who has to live with the decision that they make. Not the male, but the female. Not me, not you. But the woman who stands there and decides what she needs to do for herself. She has to live with herself. It should be HER CHOICE TO MAKE. I’m not going to sit here and debate it. It is one of those topics that will be an everlasting debate and there will never be a winner. I just gave statistics about it, because people were talking about it. I never held them to be “truths” nor did I ever say they represent the opinion I hold towards abortions. Abortions have been on the decline for the past 10 years. And most likely will continue to decrease. But the original topic was do we think Roe v. Wade should be overturned and here is my answer. No. It set a precedent, but not just for abortion, but it stands for woman’s rights and how far we have come. We may not all agree on the abortion aspect but I think we can agree that woman deserve equal opportunities just as much as anybody else, let’s not take a step back in that direction.

very well said- and I agree- if you have ever had to chose I am sure it was very hard- and I would not want to trade places with you- but to me it's important to have that choice- to me it does stand for womens rights and the 2 issues will always be linked-
