Do you say Hi so and so how are you?
let them respond and then ask to speak for the person you called?

im confused by your wording
do you mean if I call lets say his mom and his dad answers
do I say, Hi its tammy, how are you? then yes

ALWAYS.....I am always cordial to the person who answers the phone before jumping in to ask for who I am calling!

Yes, if I'm calling a girlfriend and their DH answers, I usually say hi, its me, how are you? first.

I would still, if not more-so if the wife answered. But I am close to most of my guy friends girlfriends/wives/fiances anyway....

And if I'm calling my (one and only!) male friend and his fiance answers, I make extra sure to chat w/ her first... can't be rude to the woman!

depends. usually I do speak to the person who answered the phone first.

I would talk to whoever answered the phone first and then ask for the other person.

It depends if I like the person answering - I seem to not like a lot of people

For the most part, I say: hi and ask how the person is, then ask for who I was calling for. If I like them, I'll strike up some small talk. If I seriously don't like them I say: hi, it's Colleen, is so&so there?

ETA: I lied...I usually say 'hey', not 'hi'.
