Any advice/recommendations on Digital Camcorders?

With 10 weeks to go, I've decided that I'm going to get FI a digital camcorder. Problem is, I don't know where to start... Does anyone have one already or can anyone recommend one over the other? I've done minimal research so far and it's overwhelming! All I know is that they range in price from $400 to $14000! LOL Any advice is appreciated!! Thanks all, Kathi

You may want to do a search on Consumer reports on the web. They have reports/rankings on everything! You have to register, I think, but it is worth it.

Digital camera (long)

My FI and I bought one from PC Richards for about $800. We bought a JVC. (I am not sure what model but I can check when I am home and post that later). The quality is amazing. I was skeptical at first b/c I knew we could get a regular video camera for much cheaper. But there really is a huge difference in the type of picture you get. Here are the down sides: The tapes start at about $8 and go up from there. (I think that is for a tape that lasts one hour). You can not buy one of those extensions tapes where you put the little tape in the big one and then put it in the VCR so The only way to watch the tape is to plug the camera into the TV or transfer it onto a regular VHS tape in which case you will lose the digital quality. Also the camera can take digital pictures as well that you can put right on to your computer and then email to people but those pictures always come out fuzzy. I found out afterwards that the digital still camera feature is one that has been perfected yet. I think it was worth the money. You really do see a difference in the quality of the picture.
