Any DC girls out there?

Any DC girls out there?

Hey there!
This website has been incredibly helpful while I plan my LI wedding from DC. But now I have a question that I can't seem to find the answer to.

Are there any DC girls who have recommendations for local invitation stores and/or calligraphers? The Washingtonian wedding guide isn't really helpful, since most of the calligraphers they list work with the White House. I'm guessing anyone who works with the White House is a little out of my budget!
Thanks so much!

I'm in DC. Try Greetings and Salutations, it's a cute store located in Old Town Alexandria. Also, Stone's Stationers in Alexandria.

Additionally, there is Lettering by Lynne. Try www.letteringbylynne.com.

Hope that helps!

I'm not in DC, but my calligraphy artist will work via mail. She's in Staten Island, NY. I live on Long Island and did all of my envelopes via the mail. She was so great I'm definitely using her for the place cards and the favor tags.

FH is from DC and we are relocating there either before or after the wedding (we're still negotiating that one!). Don't have any DC vendors yet, but if we do move before the weddings, I'm planning on getting invites, favors, maybe even my dress down there. FH keeps saying all of these things will be cheaper down there...have you found that to be the case at all?

Re: Any DC girls out there?

Hi again! Thanks for all the help! I was going try a local calligrapher out of sheer laziness, but I will definitely send my envelopes elsewhere if it is going to be cheaper. An invitation store in Vienna wanted $2 a set just to print them on a computer. Yikes.

As for prices in DC, I thought NY was more expensive, but DC is pretty much the same! Some of my friends getting married down here are having a hard time finding affordable stuff that is still nice. I ended up getting my dress in NY after looking a lot down here, and invitations will probably be from a website. Of course, there's no website like this for DC brides that I can find, so I could just be missing out on all the good deals.

Good luck and thanks!

Ha! I'll tell my DC-native FH that it's just as expensive down there. Sorry, but thanks!

I just wanted to say thanks for the info...I'm sure it's going to be helpful! I only moved to DC about a 1 1/2 month ago!

Yup, DC is a great city, but it is certainly an expensive one! Here's an early 'welcome to the neighborhood'! Hopefully you will love it like we do!

If you do look for dresses down here, I had a good experience at Claire Dratch in Bethesda--very helpful salespeople.

Hey everyone! I'm in the DC area too and have used some good DC vendors so I can help with some advice if anyone needs! Thanks for the calligraphy info, this is something we're dealing with now!

Seems like there are a lot of us.. maybe we need a DC GTG!

There have been so many past and present DC-LIW brides....we tried to organize a GTG once but it never worked out....would be fun to try again (and post on LIF for the ones who have moved over there--I should but we aren't really a long island family )

I'd be up for it! We could sit around and complain about the lack of good pizza and bagels

Rats. I'm in MD, so Alexandria's kind of a hike, but there's a halfway decent place in Bethesda called Corner Slice. Biggest pizza I have ever seen (except for Manhattan). There are some pretty good bagel places around, all run by displaced NYers of course! One of them has a sign up explaining what a bialy is

Re: Any DC girls out there?

Oh, so true, so true!
I did find a halfway decent pizza place in MD--Giuseppe's in Gaithersburg (displaced New Yorkers) and for bagels, Whatsa Bagel in Cleveland Park (if you can get past the awful service!)
Still not quite the same though...
When I go home to LI I just buy lots of bagels and freeze them!

Thanks for the vendor recs-I wish I had posted sooner!

Thanks! FH bought my ring from a jewler in Bethesda...his 'guy' as he likes to call him. I think he was just afraid of the diamond district in the NYC.

Re: Any DC girls out there?

Is AV Ristorante Italiano still open near Union Station? FH took me there once and they had the BEST pizza. Real Napoletean style like you get at Lombardi's or Grimaldi's in NYC. That was his response to my complaint that we couldn't get decent pizza. He still hasn't come up with one that satisfies me on bagels, though he did try with Whatsa Bagel (he used to live in Cleveland Park). They were petty good, but hey, I was raised on Magic Bagel...I've got high standards!
