Any Girls Having a Black Tie Wedding?

FH mentioned he wants to put Black Tie on the invitations. I was shocked, i thought maybe black tie optional,

Can anyone tell me the pro's and con's of putting Black Tie on the invites?
Thanks!

I thought it was just a given....the only time I have ever seen black tie was on a sweet 16 I went too...not on a wedding invite...do I need to write that???

I'm not mainly because I know the vast majority are going to show up appropriately dressed anyway and I don't want to put the cost of a tux rental and gown on my guests which is typically what black tie means.

Yeah I thought it would be a given also. I want people to be dressed up but I dont want to write it anywhere on the invites. But poeple just know to dress in a suit, I hope no one walks in with shorts , lol

Well Black Tie means gowns for the women and tuxes for the men. We're definitly not doing that, I don't want anyone to have to go out and spend tons of money on clothes to attend our reception. Just not my thing.
I think Formal or Semi-formal works better. Both mean basically suits for the men and dresses for the women, which is usually the attire at most weddings.

Yeah if you don't want black-tie you can just have formal attire written on the invite. And everyone should know by that.

we're not writing anything on the invites. im assuming ppl will see the location and the time and know to dress accordingly...but i dont want to force ppl to get a long gown or a tux because a nice dress or a black suit etc looks just as nice

im putting formal not black tie, ive had this discussion with Fh and family...Personally i just dont like every man in a tux, they'll all look alike and i like to see different style suits, and people actually comfortable with what they're wearing, some men dont like tuxes...I trust our guests to come well-dressed, a suit is still dressy but black tie would mean tuxes only.

Thanks for the advice...i think we should discuss this with both our families...both my family and his family were under the assumption it was black tie.
and so was FH but i dont want people to be forced to rent or buy something expensive in order to come to our wedding its not neccessary

i would hope that the guests would know how to dress...the only one im concerned about sooo i may write NO WHITE and FORMAL attire on her invite only .... shes not the brightest crayon in the box

what we're doing instead is letting we're asking the uncles on both sides to wear tuxes - the women we don't have to worry about cause they're all ready to wear nice long dresses anyways.

So I guess it's sorta black tie. . .

yeah, black tie optional is better.... i would be annoyed if I had to rent Alfonse a tux for a wedding...

We don't want every man to have to wear a tux and every woman to wear a gown, so we're not having black tie, we're just having a formal wedding (the men should at least wear suits and the women should wear a nice suit/dress). We're not writing anything on the invites about it though.

Doesnt the Black Tie Attire mean that the men wear tuxs and the women are in gowns...??

UM not thanks...I want my guests to be comfortable and not have to go out and spend $$ on a long gown and a tux

It will definitely be Formal Attire- like any wedding but I feel people know how to dress when going to a wedding - well atleast you'd hope so

No black tie here. I cant have my guests going out renting tuxes and buying gowns. I could care less what they wear as long as its appropiate.

If you want black tie I would think that you have to put it in on the invites. Most people don't show up to weddings in tuxes and long gowns unless it says Black Tie on the invitation. Black Tie attire is not usually expected.

black tie means that you are telling your guests that they cannot wear a suit - but that a tuxedo is REQUIRED -
I would not mandate that of my guests
