Any smokers/former smokers?

Okay... I'm a smoker and I'd REALLY like to quit before the wedding. Does anyone have any success stories, suggestions, motivational tools... anything at all??? I'd really appreciate it!

Get gum, lots and lots of gum, you need to constantly be chewing on something, thats what I found.

I think a few weeks ago smoeone recommended a book that was a good motivational tool but I can't remember.

Any chance it was 'The Easy Way to Stop Smoking'? I've heard it's good...

I couldn't find anything on this topic previously... I guess i'm not so good at searching yet! Sorry ladies!

I also quit cold turkey - it wasn't difficult at all for me to stop - I know some people have trouble though...

My FH quit using chantix. His insurance covers it. It is a medicine to help you quit smoking. You take it for 3 or 4 months I think. He has had a lot of success and he smoked 2 packs/day for over 10 years. There are some possible side effects but the only one he has experienced is some weird dreams. Definitely look into it if you have tried other stuff without success. He had tried patches, gum, cold turkey, everything and this is the only thing that has worked.

If you're gonna do it, you have to just stop. I smoked for a while (since like 10th grade) and I regretted it for so long. But when you're in HS and the pressure to be thin is so bad, you diet really consisted of Diet coke and ciggs. I struggled to run a mile when I smoked, and now I can do it with no prob.

I quit 4 years ago, b/c I developed severe stomach probs and was motivated by my FH, who quit with me. We increased our potassium intake (like a banana a day) and replaced the habit with trident. And I drank water like it was my job, b/c I was so scared of gaining weight.

So get some bananas, buy some trident, join the gym, and in about a month, the addiction is gone. I have an addictive personality, so if I can do it, you can do it.

I have trouble still..I have one a week sometimes more which isn't bad I know...I didn't stop until I started working with a lot of people who had these voices that aged them so much. Like rough and coughing. I know books have helped so many people but I know that I do not want to be that bride that needs to leave the RH to have a smoke in her awesome white dress and perhaps even get ashes on it. I mean, come on, we all know we would freak.

I smoked for a good 10 years, a light smoker. I quit once before for almost a year. Last year I stopped and it's now over a year. I had maybe like 2 cravings but since I had always said I was going to stop before I turned 30 I never picked up a cigerette again. It's all in your head. I don't think those gums, patches or any of those things will work unless you've made the decision to never go back.

Congrats!! FH has been trying as long as I have known him. His birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks, so now I am thinking that book sounds great! Thanks for sharing!

I quit about a year and a half ago cold turkey. Well actually I got really sick and COULDN'T smoke for like 2 weeks, and then at that point I just decided not to go back.

If you WANT to quit, you CAN quit. But just like everything else in life, you have to want it.

Re: Any smokers/former smokers?

i got sick about 3 years ago and i had quit for about a week- right after that, i met FH and he said he would never date a girl who smokes. so he difately gave me the motivation to quit. it was hard and i definately cheated a few times, but i dont smoke anymore and i actually HATE the smell!

i had also quit another time, and i took up knitting chewed bubble gum and used the patch. it worked (for about 3 weeks- i had no willpower)

Re: Any smokers/former smokers?

I tried smoking out when I was 16 and b/t 18 & 20 I smoked pretty much full time. For 21 and part of 22 I would smoke sometimes. I don't even remember WHEN it is was, but I just decided I didn't want to do it at all anymore.

So cold turkey is the way to go!

ALSO, remember every $6/7/8 (however much a pack costs now) that you spend on cigs, is less money for the wedding!

i tried several times to quit cold turkey... dr actually said it wasn't a good idea (don't ask.. it's too hard to explain)
i had quit for a while, but then stuff happened. stress, deaths, nights out, etc.
i don't recommend the patch, those things made my heart freak out.
Seriously if you WANT to quit do this....
have a notebook... keep a log of EVERY cig you have... how many you have while driving, while at work, before eating, after eating, sitting around, watching tv.
also note how the weather is outside and what you ate for the day.
do this for a week or two and try and find any connection... maybe you're like me, you HAVE to have a cig while driving. or you could be like my FH, you HAVE to have a cig right after eating... do you smoke because you're bored?
once you evaluate yourself you should be able to identify the habbits.
now while driving chew on a straw or a pen.. seriously as if you were smoking a cig.
after eating go outside and chew on a piece of gum.
you're watching tv and you get the crave, go outside and run in place....

I personally don't want to quit just yet.. i know that sounds weird, but some people want to quit, some don't.

also- a friend of mine bought that electronic cig. and last I heard it was working... not sure if she quit yet though I haven't heard from her in a while.

o yeah dont wear the patch at night. it gave me and my brother CRAZY nightmares. the patch can make you wig out a bit. feel dizzy and lightheaded.
