any tips for saving money, in general?

Does anyone have any suggestions for saving money in everyday life? I'm not really looking for suggestions on how to save money on wedding costs, just ways to accumulate more $$$ to use for whatever reason.

Thanks in advance

I want to ge the credit card that rounds the total up a dollar and deposits the change into a savings account...that is money that will never be missed and probably accumulates pretty quickly. I always see the commercial for it but forgot what company it is!!

if you are talking about the future, then I would suggest automatically having money transferred from your paycheck to a 401k or Roth IRA account. In regards to saving for a house, or large expense item, it would help of you and FH open a joint account together and both transfer in money into the account and no withdrawals can be taken out unless you both consent to the purchase.

I love Discover Credit card because when you spend money you earn a cashback bonus award. You can take the cash, or double it with one of their partners ie red lobster, put it towards your bill or even donate it to charity!

Limit the amount of times you eat out and plan your meals at home. I've noticed that this has saved us alot of money.

get yourself a costco membership and divvy up the large portions.

have yard sales instead of throwing stuff away (or put it on ebay or craigslist)

shop for items on ebay, craigslist or freecycle.

freecycle is a place like craigslist where people give away or trade things they don't want or need.

when shopping online, always search for coupon codes before completing your order.

make sure your car tires are full of air to get the best mileage/ gas out of your car.

stay home and maybe just buy some board games instead of going out to bars and clubs...you'll save a ton and get more quality time with FH.

Fh and I sold alot of our books and textbooks (many of them over 10 years old!) and dvds on half.com...we didn't get a lot for them, but it was better than giving them away or throwing them away

Transfer all credit cards balances to a new card with a lower APR.

Try to pay for all purchases with cash (hard but not impossible)

Get rid of your house phone and use your cell for all calls. Or bundle your cable, house phone and internet to save.

make a real effort to turn off all unused lights and switch bulbs to energy savers (makes a big difference)

save at the pump (over time) by not speeding and setting your cruise control on the highway.

reduce the number of times you eat out or hit the bar each month -- those drinks really add up!

Have payroll money automatically transfered to your savings account. You won't miss it as much.

Save every receipt -- you never know what new thing the gov't might allow you to deduct.

check your deductions -- don't give the gov't an interest free loan!!! Too many people think, 'Oh, I'll get it back' but you are better off investing that money or paying off a loan with it.

go back to cutting coupons if you don't already

shop around for cheaper insurance

do your own yardwork (any handiwork really) rather than hire someone

list unwanted items on ebay or craigslist -- your junk is someone else's treasure!

thank you, these are great so far!

I admit we probably go out to eat too often, with drinks, appetizers, etc and I also shop WAY too often. I should probably try to sell some of my old stuff on ebay or craigslist and maybe cut back a little on the shopping.

both of our families are contributing a set amount to the wedding, but we know we will have a lot of other expenses coming so we want to try to start saving more money than we have been

I forgot paying all bills online -- saves stamps, and in the long run you'll buy less paper checks

Bank of America does that - Maximum amount of $300.00 annually I believe. Wachovia has a similar program. I have learned to ask myself...Is this a necessary spend ? I only go to the store with a list and stick to it. Bringing lunch to work and FH & I stay in a lot more than we used to.

Bring your breakfast and lunch to work so you're spending the money on it. Don't buy coffee or tea at Starbucks. All this stuff adds up.

Open an online savings account! The interest rates have gone down (to about 3.5%) unfortunately (they used to be at 5%) but they are still higher then normal banks. Not only do you accrue more interest but it is more difficult to withdraw (you have to transfer to your regular bank and it takes about 5 days to clear). Since it is more difficult to get your fingers on it......it makes it easier for you to save! My FH and I opened on back in October and we have already my over 50 dollars just in interest! When you see the interest accrue each month it makes you WANT to save more. I totally know where you are coming from......I am a champagne girl living on a beer budget! I love to shop too :)

Re: any tips for saving money, in general?

I read this article in a wedding mag about saving money and it is so true, if you can stick to it. Basically, they said that you would be amazed how much you spend on stupid stuff like starbucks, gum, eating out, buying new clothes that you really do not need, etc. If you can just save a few bucks a month on unnecessary items, it can add up bigtime. You could have the money for your favors or invites. You could afford the table linens you wanted, etc. It could be as much as a couple of hundred dollars.

Also, my FH and I had to take out a loan for part of the wedding. We were able to get a low interest loan as opposed to using high interest credit cards for stuff. Also, we put our money into a mutual fund or a CD instead of a regular savings account, which will earn us a couple of hundred dollars of interest. We also registered for our Honeymoon, so that we could afford a nicer one.

Don't forget some things you can pay off after the wedding such as part of the photography and videography. I know my FH and I do not live together, so when we move into the same place, it will save us about $400-$600 per month, which will help us pay off any wedding debt. Also, I think we are supposed to get $600 each back from the federal govt. this year by May at the latest in addition to our tax return money, so that should help out a lot. Pretty much everyone should be getting that $600 from what I hear in the news.
