Anybody NOT excited about changing their name?

Anybody NOT excited about changing their name?

I really am not thrilled with the idea of changing my last name. FH is adamant about it though and I'm not about to have that argument again.

I'm kind of freaking out though b/c I ran into an ex this morning (who is an arrogant jerk) and afterwards, I remembered how excited I was when I was with him to become Mrs. Jerk. I was much younger, naive and not a professional back then, but I was kind of disturbed by that. I dont' think I have ever doodled my name with my new last name. Is that weird? Or is it b/c I'm almost 30 and haven't doodled since high school and if I was doodling at 30 years old, THAT would be weird?

can't wait to change my name!! so excited about being a Mrs. but it is a personal choice too I know a lot of people who hypenate their name to hold onto their maiden name, and then some people don't change their name at all. it has to work for you and FH

Re: Anybody NOT excited about changing their name?

First let me say. I'm glad you are not Mrs.Jerk.

But I totally understand. I think if I was 20 it wouldn't be an issue. I would just do it, but I'm 35. I feel like my name IS who I am. To change it would loose my identity. FH and I have had a number of talk (and they were talks) about it. He was not comfortable with me not changing my name and I was not comfortable changing it. I finally said I would hyphenate it. (And you know my name that would be quite a mouth full) But then he said, that he was sorry he was giving me a hard time and that it really didn't matter.

I don't think I will rush out and have it done. But maybe in a few months or years, I will hyphenate it. I does look very professional to have a hyphenated name. It's just it wont fit on anything. My name is 9 letter and his is 7. Oh well. At least no one else will ever have the same name as I me.

I don't mind changing my name but for work related reasons its a PITA.

FH and I are debating, we want to relocated to AZ in a few years so I'm figuring on wating until then to make the change; he's figuring on me making the change right after the wedding.

Sorry I can't sympathize with you. I'm DYING to change my name since I still have my ex's last name. I never went back to my maiden (which I loved) after my divorce since everyone kept telling me I might be remarried. Well the day is almost here and I can't wait to take my husband's name now.

That definitely makes two of us! LOL Makes me wonder what I was ever thinking! Hence the excitement to be Mrs. Jerk.

My main issue is I don't want to be affiliated with some other people with the same last name and everyone ALWAYS mispronounces and/or misspells his last name which irks me to no end. I like my easy to pronounce country club-esque last name! I know...I sound like a whiney brat.

To be honest I really don't mind taking FH's last name & I am kind of excited about the name change. You can always hyphenate your last name or keep your last name for professional reasons and FH's last name for everything else.

Is it the Mr. Jerk I'm thinking of?

The whole name change thing is definitely different now that we're professionals. In high school I paired my name up with every crush or boyfriend. It didn't even occur to me that I could or would keep my last name.
But now as an adult and a professional, I see it differently. I plan to use my name and his (no hyphen). I've worked too hard to get where I'm at now and feel like I'll be losing some of my identity if I take away my last name. I know it's tradition to take FH's name, but I've asked him how he would feel if he had to take my name. Surprise, surprise, he wouldn't like it.

I didnt' change my name and I love my DH for saying the following to me when I told him I wasn't changing my name: 'it would be nice if you took my name b/c it's tradition...but it is YOUR name and there is now way I can tell you what to do with it'

He's incredible

I'm so ready to change my last name. I love my last name but it constantly gets misspelled. My last name is currently 'Avvocato'!! I won't be called a 'fruit' anymore!!

you are so funny! My FH wanted me to change my name like the minute after the dude says 'husband and wife' but I keep making excuses like 'passport/honeymoon' stuff and he falls for it BUT after that....who knows????????

I LOVE my last name, so it is definatly rough for me to change it! BUT I am so excited to be his MRS. and I know how much it means to him, so I am willing to take his last name.

Re: Anybody NOT excited about changing their name?

I understand what you are saying - I'm 33 and have had my maiden name my entier life.

Alhough I am really looking forward to taking my FHs name it sounds really funny to me. I know I'll get used to the sound if it, but right now it doesn't sound like me.

I'm sorry your FH is so adament about you taking his name, maybe he was just shocked that you were considering keeping your maiden name. I hope he can come to understand how you feel about your name and that eeping your maiden name isn't at all related to how much you love your husband.

Good Luck!

Re: Anybody NOT excited about changing their name?

I am not at all excited about this. I'm totally excited about being his wife, but I'm the only child in my family and my last name dies with me, so I feel very bad about changing it. Too long and silly sounding to hyphenate, and would be a long and awkward middle name for kids. It makes me very sad

Re: Anybody NOT excited about changing their name?

my last name is extremely unique, and FH's is REALLY generic, like there's a billion people w/ his last name.......I really don't want to take it, I was going to hyphenate, but then I'm thinking it might just be easier to use his name ahhhhh what us women do for those men! maybe one day they'll truly appreciate our sacrifices!

Re: Anybody NOT excited about changing their name?

I used to when i was younger, say i would keep my own name because I was on this real feminist kick back then, feeling the need to prove myself all the time. But I think it was because I was with the wrong men if that makes sense. I've mellwoed out A LOT around my dh. Oh Im still a hot-tempered latina, but now I'm not threatened by marriage nor do i feel I am losing any part of myself by taking on my husband's name. I am becoming part of him and he of me because by giving me his name he is promising to atke care of me just as he would himself because I am 'his' now. I know that may not sound very modern but he is such a good man and my DAD likes him and he hates everyone lol. Its a personal choice. My new last name is a TRAINWRECK Its croatian and how you see it is NOT how you say it so its TRUE LOVE motivating me to take it on lol.
