anybody who works in retail, i have a question

Original post by Espo22

OK, i have a bit of a situation which seems like this is all i deal with lately

Ill explain the situation and then ask for the info i need.

Ok so 2 weeks ago i bought something at swarovski, it was the wrong price so had to do a return and about $160 was supposed to be put back into my bank account since i used a debit card. I even asked the girl right after how long it will take until its back into my account and she said it should go in right away. Well days go by and nothing, i called them 3x and the people who pick up dont even know w** is going on. FINALLY today i call and this lady was able to help me, she found the transaction from the date i told her and then said to me that the return was done and that instead of cash back the cashier did store credit, now im annoyed and told the lady that i specifically asked the girl ahead of time if they do cash back or store credit and she said they do both so i can pick which one i want and i said cash back, and like i said above i even asked the girl 'when will the money be put back into my account'. The lady i spoke to today said that they do both but the girl must've messed up and instead of putting it down as cash back return she did store credit and must've not even realized. So i told her that sorry but i dont want store credit, i want the cash. First she tells me 'well you would have this store credit for a long time and can use it whenever so its not bad' i said NO its not what i want and not what i need at the moment and its not my mistake. She said once its put as store credit in the computer they cant reverse it. She said however, they can have the accountant who goes there once a week to try and fix it, she took down my info and said she'll have the accountant call me on monday when she is in.

Ok i am really annoyed, i dont know what is going on that i keep dealing with idiots. I even sit and think 'did i do anything wrong, did i not make myself clear' but NO that is not the case, when i mess up i say it, i messed up yesterday when purchasing from paper presentation and i took it as money lost bc it was my mistake.

But here is my question. Is it really true that they cant reverse it? I really don't see what the big deal is, they see it was a return, i dont want the store credit and its not my fault that one of their employees did that without even knowing herself since right after she did the return she told me that the money should be back into my account right away. Do i really have to wait for the accountant to do something? and will she be able to? What can i do or ask? This is BS that i have to deal with it bc of their mistake. Its not ALOT of money but its still $160 that is mine and gone for no reason

Before you call the corp.office you should go back to the store and speak to the store manager, explain what the issue is because if anyone can fix this is the store manager. If talking to the store manager is a dead end then go to the next step. Usually you get a better result in person than over the phone because most of these workers are lazy and will pretend their too busy to fix the issue. I had this problem once with Target after several phone conversation I had to go in the store and the store manager pull up the return information and review and fix my problem in about 15 minutes. Give IT A TRY! let me know the out come.

i spoke to the store manager today. But yeah she said it can most likely be reversed but she has to ask her accountant how to go about it. But thank you and will definitely do if i dont like the answer i hear when they call me back

If you already spoke to the manager then I would wait and see what the accountant can do for you- honestly I think it can be reversed but not 100% sure if it can- you might be stuck with the store credit

i am going to shove that store credit down the cashiers throat but hopefully it works out

I don't work in retail but I have lots of experience working with customer service (I work for NYC Parks & Recreation) and I met some pretty bad customers- I wouldn't want to mess with you if you were going to do that to me.

I am fairly sure they'll reverse it and get you your $$ back...especially if the manager said that it can be done once the accountant comes in on Monday.

EXACTLY!!!!!!! i think some just dont know how and instead of going to somebody and asking them how, they'd rather not bc i guess they dont want the other person to know they dont know how or that they themself messed up, but not my problem. The manager even said when i called back that she has to wait for the accountant to ask exactly how its done

we have people come in all the time to return something and don't have the recipt...if they fight us on it we let them know if they come back with the store credit when they find the recipt we will fix it for them...it can be done....but like i said its either that they dont want to do it or their systems dont allow it.........so it can go either way either they are BSing you or they really cant do it directly in the system...hope it works out for ya!

well BB&B is the best at returns, exchanges or whatever it is, i have to say that. I wish they were all that easy. But thank you so much

if she was able to pull up the transaction in her history she should have been able to post void it and redo the trasaction as if it never happened.

that being said if they still ******** you around...call corporate and make a formal complaint...not only will they most likely rectify it...they may give you a lil something extra for your troubles such as a coupon, gift card...whatever.

I'd keep going up the chain of command within the store, denise. This is ridiculous.

Re: anybody who works in retail, i have a question

Call them-or go to the store and say I want to use my store credit...if I decide I dont want this item can I return it for cash back? If they say yes, get the item then say Now I want to return it

Most likely they cant reverse and the accountant does have to do it...that I would say is true, but the mistake is not yours and they need to fix it. Make sure you get everyones name that you speak to-and call on monday and talk to the same person.

It is absolutely okay to call the corporate office at this point. She has gone through many different people at this one store for many weeks.

Yes, exactly! Especially since this isn't a store that you find in every mall. You'd expect much better customer service than they have provided!

Re: anybody who works in retail, i have a question

That is bs. If we have something like that, we would just re-ring the transaction and then re-return it. Also, they probably are able to cash out store credits-we rarely do it but as a manager I can make a judgement call and for something like this I would definitely do it. You could also try calling another store and seeing how they would handle it.First ask to speak with the store manager (if the person you spoke with wasn't)....if not...find out the District Manager's info or a corporate number. District manager is best because they put pressure on the store to deal with it so it doesn't turn into a corporate complaint. I am not familiar with Swarovski's policy but that doesn't seem right that they can't account for their own mistake. Good luck!!! I think that just by showing that you know what you're talking about, you will get what you need.

Denise,
First, sorry you are having these annoying issues lately.
Secondly, i was just telling DH and my mom that everytime i have to deal with someone either in a store or on the phone, i end the transaction saying or thinking 'what a moron!'

I think we are currently dealing with the effects of our nation having a horrible education system! All those years in HS when they said america was # 30 or 50 - we are 'reaping' the benefits!!

I'm not even kidding; i had to call customer service for several different companies / issues
everyone i spoke with, even within the same co. gave different answers to the same questions!

its the blind leading the blind out there lately!!!

Ooh....right she pulled it up in the computer! Forgot about a post-void. I know in my store we can only do post-voids the day of the transaction. After that, we need to call Sales Audit to do it so maybe that's why they need to call the accountant. For a situation like this in our store we would probably just do it the round-about way because it would be less of an inconvenience for you since it's been a long time. It's not 'technically' the right way to do it, but there's got to be a way so we figured it out lol. Good luck! Give 'em hell!

Ok i am pretty sure they can`t reverse it. it`s kind of like when you buy a giftcard you can`t get cash for it at the store. I think even on the back it says it has no cash value, BUT in this case i think what you should suggest is that they make a fake purchase with the store credit and then re-retun that merchandise and with that return credit you back cash! Really how hard could that be. Right??

exactly and if not then take the money out of the persons paycheck who messed up, not my problem. I even asked the girl before she did the transaction if i get the money back and THEN she went to the register to do it.

there HAS to be a way around it! i have worked in retail for years and they DRILL it in to your head 'the customer is always right' the only catch with that is they can say since the 2nd purchase was done with a credit they may only be able to issue another credit so do you still have your original recepit?

yes i keep every receipt, it drives others nuts bc i honestly have a huge box of receipts even from the 90's ... but i always say, what if i get audited and need one of these receipts

Wow!! i wish i was like that! i can never ever find the one i need they usually get crupmpled up in the bottom of the purse i was using that day and i can`t remember what one it was when it comes to needing it and then it gets tossed!

BUT I think you should go in use your credit to buy the same thing and then return it with the original recepit. *****this may pnly work if they don`t have a barcode on the recepit******* if they do and they scan it it will come back already returned.

Re: anybody who works in retail, i have a question

I have been working in retail for 8+ years and this is def not the first time that I have heard of this. Yes, they can rectify the situation and give you cash back....they just either don't know how to do this or are afraid that they'll get in trouble. One piece of advice that I can tell you for sure is that the minute that you run your mouth or give them an attitude is the exact point where they will stop listening to you and completely tune you out. You don't have to threaten them to call regional, district, territory, BBB, etc. Simply and calmly but assertively explain it, what you would like them to do about it, and let them go from there. If they still do nothing then tell them that you're sorry but you will have to take it up with someone higher up.
IMO, if I am dealing with a customer (who is clearly wrong) who says that they're going to call the district manager, I say go ahead. It has no effect on my job or reputation AT ALL.
You have a right to get your money back and I'm sure that you will eventually. You just have to be persistent and refuse to listen to anything other than, 'We're sorry, here's your $160 back!'

i didnt want to bump my post and even FM'ed, soon2bemrsalberti, when i saw her reply above but after reading your post i decided to reply.

AMEN!!!!!!!! and it is very frustrating. It's not like it happens once in a blue moon but like you said, almost everytime you call up customer service. Even today, i didnt even feel like complaining about what happened because I just feel like people will think maybe its me . But I ordered boxes yesterday from this company in LI, they said they will ship it same day but i'll receive it monday bc of saturday shipping is more but when i asked the guy how much extra it was he said oh he doesnt know he'll have to put my order through with saturday shipping in order to tell me, which made no sense then lol bc the only way i find out is to charge me first for sat shipping plus he said he would have to wait and then place the order so i said no just place it now. I called back maybe not to long after maybe 20 minutes the most and I told the girl i just placed an order for 200 boxes gave her my confirmation number and asked if it was shipped yet. She said no not yet, usually around 3pm, anyways i told the girl that they told me monday I will receive the boxes, but if they were open tomorrow(which is today) i can just pick up the boxes myself since it was a bit of a rush that i needed them and would help to have it this weekend instead of monday and since i live in NY and instead of shipping it and me having to wait until monday, if they were open on saturdays i can just pick it up myself and not to ship it but if they are not open saturdays that its ok and to go ahead with the shipping and ill just wait until monday. She said yes thats fine and to come around 2pm. Ok so i drive all the way to commack and they are closed they girl must've gotten confused and thought i said 'oh no ill pick it up myself' but monday, which makes no sense bc if i would've received the boxes on monday why would i go myself to get them . Even FH when he was on the phone with them to give them his CC info and address, he handed the phone back to me and said 'holy sh*t what a moron' he had to repeat his CC number a few times and the address, even what we ordered.

Even at work, people call me from companies we do business with and they'll say 'oh i need to check this trade' so ill say ok give me cusip number which is how we look it up, and they go 'oh yeah that would be good if i have it' why are you calling me if you dont have the info. Or i guess ppl who are new call up and ill go over things with them and they dont even know what i am doing or even know simple terminology which we are supposed to use, and when i say it some dont know. I even had someone the past week call me 3x bc she was saying a trade failed(happens all the time and common) and when are we going to deliver it(send money to their bank) i had to tell her that its the other way around and we are waiting payment from them bc they bought it from us, and had to say this each and everytime and explain to her why and how she can see for herself which was so simple.

Then i am sorry but if a person barely speaks english how am i going to get anything handled. And i dont mean an accent bc that is fine, i mean ppl who dont speak that much english. I agree this is just getting frustrating, i dont know whats going on.

AND BTW in regards to my situation with the store credit/refund thing. I did speak to a manager and she told me there is a way to do it but she just doesn't know how and has to ask the accountant for directions on how to do it. Why is she the manager?

we should have a thread just on BS we deal with lol and the whole getting different answers from everyone else is something that happens all the time too.

ugh, i TOTALLY know what you are talking about

im dead serious when i say it happens EVERY time i call customer service
this happened with our plane tickets with delta, DH canceling a credit card that he didn't want anymore, xbox customer service, social security 1-800 people so i can get a new card, the people at michael's that had to reframe my ketubah 3 TIMES because they kept on doing it wrong, i can seriously go on and on and on

the more people i meet, the more i realize just how inept people are!!! it amazes me how some of them find their way to GET to work in the morning!!!

SO unbearably frustrating!!

Yeah I have to say anytime you call about a phone, credit card, bank or anything seems like some people dont know exactly what to do. Is everybody new? hahaha. Once in a blue moon you find somebody who knows exactly what to do, very helpful and gets it done right.

The funniest is when i called swarovski the 2nd time, the girl was beyond lost. She looked up my info and told me 'oh yeah we have your order on hold that you did over the phone' i was like NO i didnt order anything over the phone and dont have anything on hold, i already bought the piece i am talking about. I also told her that when i did the exchange there is a book that the cashier wrote in with all the info about the transaction and to just look at that, she had NO idea what i was talking about, so i basically had to tell her that when they do exchanges or returns they write it down in a book, she had no clue lol shouldn't she know this haha. When i did speak to the manager she even said that yes all returns and exchanges are written into a book and that is policy.

I think one thing is people don't know how to ask if they need help or don't know something. If somebody calls me at work with something I don't know about i won't sit there and say 'oh sorry i dont know i cant help you' and then leave it at that and say bye or make up things. I give it to somebody who will know or i ask.

But yeah i completely believe that just about everytime you call any of the places you mentioned that you deal with BS
