We're planning on doing something similar.

Yes! We just booked 10 days in Maui. We were pricing Aruba around the same time and it was going to cost just as much as a stay in Maui at a 4 star hotel. We're staying at the Maui Prince Hotel. It's very private and there's no kids allowed. They even threw in comp breakfast and a convertible. With the flight it came to $5400 total. We may take a flight to Kuai while we're there also. We are so psyched b/c there's so much to do and see there!

My girlfriends and I went to Hawaii and Vegas for our college graduation. We did 7 nights in Hawaii, and 3 in Vegas. You lose time going back east, so I'd add an extra Vegas day! Have fun!
Oh yeah, similarly, we did Hawaii/Sonoma for our honeymoon (8 nights Hawaii/3 nights Sonoma/last night San Fran).

do you think its crazy to want to do a stopover in Vegas on the way there and a stopover in Sonoma on the way home? will it bankrupt us? thanks for the info. I don't want to 'over do' it with the travelling. i do want to return relaxed.

The Vegas/Hawaii/Sonoma deal MIGHT be too much in terms of airport visits! It could get most tiresome! It might not be ridiculously expensive, but all that airport time might be too much (at least, I'd feel that way!) Our HM route was: JFK-LAX, LAX to Maui, Maui to LAX, LAX to Oakland, and Oakland to JFK....that was WAYYYYY more than enough!
ETA: You'd have to check out all the possible routes & which ones are non-stop. I'm not sure if there's a Vegas-Hawaii non-stop. It's possible it could work out much like our honeymoon, but it is still a lot of airport visits. I
