Re: anyone else a goth growing up
Me me me! The best treat when I was 13/14 years old was going into 'the city' and buying new goth garb at Antique Boutique and such. I still have a bunch of records (yes, vinyl!) from back in the day -- Bauhaus, Joy Division, Smiths, early Love and Rockets (before they had that 'No New Tale to Tell' video and sold out, man!). My lil' gothettes and I saw Depeche Mode, Siousxie, Love and Rockets, Psychedelic Furs in concert lots and lots of times. Best of all: I recently found a Skinny Puppy t-shirt while cleaning my closet. I gave it to my dog.
I got over the goth stuff later in high school and then became a super college radio nerd...
I love that story about your cousin. 'Did they have goths back then?' Like the '80s were the Stone Age!
OMG I loved the Smiths, Depeche Mode, and the Cure! I found some of my Morrissey t shirts when cleaning out my closet at my Dad's house. I just can't throw them away! I dyed my hair black for a bit, but it looked really bad.

Re: anyone else a goth growing up
I was sort of a goth crossed with a seattle grunge rocker... so I wore all black, heavy black eyeliner, black lipstick- with a flannel over it! and I listened to Smiths, Joy Division, et al- PLUS Nirvana, Janes Addiction, etc.

More of a skater type than goth - we listened to the smiths/ DM and the Cure ... hung out with floppy haired boys with long shorts. I remember thinking my friend's older sister was sooo cool because she went to the Angle. I had plaid shorts !!!!

Re: anyone else a goth growing up
I went through a phase in college where I wouldn't wear anything unless it was black or grey, and 5 sizes too big. I called myself 'alternative' but others called me goth.

Re: anyone else a goth growing up
I was a preppy punk in HS
(I was a TOTAL prep Freshman year then had a crush on a punk rock boy soph year)
I was just too cute (little girl face cute) to be taken seriously as a punk (even with my head shaved strangely and the black leather MC) ...
I wasn't into goth garb, but I listened to all those bands......I would love to hear some of it again like Joy Division and Love & Rockets, Depeche Mode was my favorite (although I never considered them 'goth'), Smiths and the Cure. I didn't like Bauhaus though. I tried coming into the house once with a ton of black eyeliner on and my parents flipped out. So no goth clothing here.
There's this band from early 80's...APB...they weren't goth per se but does anyone remember them? I think they were English or Scotish.

Totally drawing a blank on the band other than the name ... although I'm sure I have their TAPE upstairs!!

Didnt APB sing a song that went like.. 'I would like to shoot you down.. I would likeeee to shoot you down.. funk get ready to roll, funk get ready to roll, leave my funk alone'..
