I just can't help myself. I walk into Barnes & Noble and walk out $55 lighter and this is like every month if I can get away with it.
Went to B&N for the first time in months tonight.
I do re-read my books.. I just HAVE to own them..
Am I alone?

When I buy a house you cna bet it's gonna ahve a library. I have more books than a small town library. I have 6 floor to ceiling bookshelves filled with books. I can't help it. i LOVE books. I have to buy them. it's an addiction, I think. But I try to buy as much from the bargain rack as possible!

I agree. I love to own books. I consider them a collection, so it's like a hobby to collect books. That would be so great to have a library in my house one day...

You mean fold in the corners of the pages.. argh.. drives me nuts. I walk around with a number in my head if I don't have a bookmark.
Rather memorize the page than fold it!

Same here. And I am notorious for using cash as a bookmark :D

I told Danielle that we are going to have to get a book shelf in the new apartment. I now plan on buying books to read. I bought a few in the past few months, and it is so much better than taking it out of the Library.

Yes...I just picked up another book to add to my library. The Paid Companion by Amanda Quick. I read the first few pages, and it looks pretty good. Click here for info on the book

Re: Anyone else addicted to actually BUYING books?
I LOVE boarders and B&N...I cannot go in there at lunch time, it will empty my checking account...My father bought a bookstore and I had books coming out of my ears! I have books I haven't even read yet...Scott said we should sell them. I was like NO WAY, not books!!! I want to make book shelves in our PA house to give my boxed books a home. I LOVE BOOKS!

I tend to go a lot more to the library now than I used to. I used to buy a lot of books (especially Romance Novels). Since I can get the newer books more easily, I tend to get more of them at the library or borrow them from someone. I did get some books with a gift certificate though.

Why do you say it's so much better?
Personally I think having a library is wonderful. Yes I buy books too but (and yes I am biased) libraries are great when there's a book you kinda want to read but you don't have time to sit in B&N and don't know if you will like it after you buy it. Sometimes I start to read it, like it so much I'll return it before I finish it and buy it then at the store.
Besides, our libraries need our help. Circulation is down because people feel it's superior to buy books and alot of libraries are actually losing state money because of that. Maybe your taxes wouldn't drop dramatically if you borrowed more books but it's nice to know that you're helping to keep it open and running smoothly for those that can't afford to buy books all the time.
Just my 2 cents

Interesting point.
I never went to a library for just books though. I went for research and for story telling. To be honest, when I was a kid that was the 'place' to hang out because my parents wouldn't get mad and they had a whole upstairs dedicated to kidstuff.
Mostly I recall libraries as always having outdated books. I used to love going through old family crest books, old science books - to see what we though of ourselves back then - and records of special effects and broadway shows. I'd use the library to see movies for free like Gone with the Wind or Logan's Run. Things that Blockbuster doesn't carry anymore.
That was Texas though.. I haven't seen that kinda stuff in a NY library but to be honest I haven't really researched one well.
I rarely pick up a book I don't at least finish. If I didn't like it I donate it to shelters were kids or women can't/don't want to go to a library.
If a library were like a B&N then I'd guess I'd be in there more often now wouldnt I? Help in libraries is slim picking and I hate the 'looks' I get from some cranky old lady who may diapprove of my reading materials. I like having a place to sit and read, if a library had a cheerful light and a QUIET area with comfy seating, friendly staff, up to date books, and a cafe I'd go there!

Me! I am way worse with books than I ever have been with clothes or stuff like that. I cannot go into B&N without buying something. Are any of you guys Barnes and Noble Club Members? It's helpful. The $25 for the membership fee is made back 100x over! plus they send you extra incentives via email + through the mail each month.

I don't buy books. They're free at my job!!! I love being a librarian!!! I would never dream of giving a patron a criticizing look when they ask for certain reading material. It's judgemental and definitely not professional.
I totally love book stores and can spend hours in B&N. If I see something interesting, I just write down the title/author and get it from work.
Happy reading!!! Donna 10/5/03
