as in COP?? My FH is CONSTANTLY leaving his gun out....I have told him a zillion times (minimum) how petrified I am of guns and big knives...and he STILL leaves his gun out!!! Last night I slept at my parents house and I came home and there it was on the Kitchen table. Last time he left it on the dining room chair!!!! Yes, there are safety features but he promised me while he was still in the academy that he would always lock it up when he's home. It's bad enough he carries it off duty sometimes. I really have issues with guns, they scare the crap out of me....I feel totally disrespected when he does this. I pay the bills here too and I just feel like my feelings are being completely disregarded. Everytime I mention it we start arguing because he pretty much thinks its ridiculous that I am so affraid of them, and it just really bothers me. How can I get him to lock the damn thing up when he gets home?? I HATE SEEING THAT STUPID THING!

FH is a cop. He doesn't leave his gun everywhere but sometimes he puts it in the night table drawer instead of the safe. His gun has no lock but he unloads it as soon as he gets home. They are actually supposed to have one on them even off duty but he usually doesn't carry his.

not marrying a cop but i grew up around guns, i think once u get more used to it u wont be so freaked out.. have u considered having u'r fh take u to a firing range? so u can learn about it a little more.. that way if u see he's left it out, u wont freak.. u'll just pick it up and put it away like u'll do with his socks, and video games...
also my uncle is nypd and he ALWAYS carries his piece.. christmas dinner.. sitting aroun with family and he has a gun on him.. *just in case santa busts in the door i guess.. lol*

He wants me to go to a gun safety class and to the range with him, but I honestly have no desire to. I see them and my hands shake. I want NOTHING to do with it. He's a cop...thats fine. But this is something I just can't bend on. They are dangerous, they can kill someone (at the very least, hurt them) and I really just don't want to know it exists. I know it's going to be a part of my life, but I'm just not ready to deal with it. I just don't understand why he can't put the gun away routinely. As soon as he takes his jacket off it should be locked up. It's not like we are talking about video games, this can kill someone, ya know?? You don't see me bringing home dirty syringes from the hospital.....

I know there are plenty of people out there who have no fear of guns, but i'm not one of them. My question is how can i get him to just put it away??? I understand some people couldn't care less, but I don't want him to get sloppy with it and then we have kids and he can't break the habit.

I am not marrying one, but my dad is a detective, he has always been very protective of us not only with the guns, but of us not ever hearing any of the stories either! As we have gotten older is leaves it out sometimes. I would just tell FH that you really really have a fear and stand up for your feelings!!! He has to come around!

No, FH is an Exceutive in the city, no guns, laying around, but I'm with you I am terrifed of guns too.
Not to defend your FH but maybe since it's literally a part of his everyday life, maybe to him, it;s more like a security than a weapon. Do you get where I'm going?

now this is a very real fear and a true and valid concern.. u're going to have to really sit him down and DRILL IT INTO HIS HEAD...
the only thing i can think of would be a little mean, but it would involve u moving his gun the next time he leaves it out.. so when he looks for it he thinks it's lost.. and then point ou that if he locked it up regularly that would never happen.. as cops the one things they can NOT have is a lost weapon.. if he sweat that out for a couple of hours, he'd never just leave it around again.. but he'd prob be very VERY VERY angry with you afterwards..
good luck..

Re: Anyone else marrying one?
I'm not marrying a cop, but it sounds kind of irresponsible to leave a fully loaded gun around the house. What if a child (child of a friend, neighbor, anybody) came into the house for whatever reason, saw it, and decided to play with it??? Not to mention the fact that it could be stolen if god forbid someone broke into your house/ apmt. Also, I'm not sure if you are planning on having children in the future, but he should get in the habit of putting it away properly for if and when you do so that no accident ever happens. To be honest, I would be really pissed too. The reasons I mentioned were just safety reasons, but now you say that you are deathly afraid of them which just makes the situation worse. I think it is irresponsible and inconsiderate and would really have a big talk with him about it. Sorry if that sounded too harsh. JMO

my dad was a court officer but he always kept it locked up when he came home. But sometimes he would carry too.
you should tell him that he should get in the habit of putting it away because it shouldnt be out like that when you have kids!

I just read this thread to my FH, who happen to be sitting next to me by chance... Hes an officer and he said 'lock it up' every night. Your FH should have a safety box it should go in automatically when he gets home.

Ugh. I'm with you! I hate seeing it.
FH leaves his off-duty in a safe.. but this month he needs it everyday for work.. so it's sitting on my kitchen table!
Since I too am petrified of them, he has it in a sealed small tupperware container. (kind of out-of-sight, out-of-mind type of thing).
