Anyone else scared of going to Mexico on their honeymoon?
I keep hearing mixed things about mexico and how bad the drug and crime is getting. This is the only place that i can afford now and it sucksss

I wouldnt be worried, as always in foreign countries don't go anywhere by yourself, hold your purse close and don't walk into any dark alleys.....don't worry just stay in the tourist stops and at the resort.

Most of the crime they are talking about is near the border of US and Mexico. Not too many tourist places by the border, so I think you are fine. Of course there is always crime, but that is anywhere you go. As always, be careful, be aware, be prepared.

I would not be worried about going to Cancun. I was there in 07 so I dont know how it is since then but at the time we had rented our own jeep wrangler and drove ourselves to chichunitsu and talum (spelling is off).
The Mariott there is AMAZING!!!!

Its true that if you are in a touristy area (riveria maya, cancun, cozumel, puerto vailarta etc.) you will be safe! Those areas thrive on tourism and the chances of something happening to you are slim to none. If you are really worried though, check out Jamaica or the Dominican Republic because they are in a similar price range :)

Where in mexico are you going? I've been there 3x all ready and if you are in a tourist area you'll be fine. If you are going to cancun, just stay away from the real 'downtown' cancun, but the tourist 'downtown' where all the clubs and bars and such is location is safe. most of the stuff you hear on the news is not in tourist areas.

I think it is the same everywhere...where are you going and staying? Mexico isn't unsafe in the resorts etc. The border communities are and some other areas. If you are going to a reputable place, you should be fine.

We went to Mexico for our HM in Sept 08 and we never felt unsafe. Even when we were off the resort, like on an excursion, we had the comfort of booking with American Express. If you plan on leaving the resort for an excursion, don't cheap out, book with a reputable company and don't go off on your own.

I know that the tourist areas are ususally safe but there have been many reports stating that taxis/areas very close by tourists areas are seeing a rapid increase in crimes. The US is now advising ppl to travel elsewhere due to this. Its not just for spring break or those crossing the border-its for everyone.

psh.. it's fine.
I've been to Mexico probably more times then i've been to the beach lol.
Mexicans are probably the friendliest people around, always willing to help and everything.
As with any area they have bad areas but DR does too and TONS of people still go there to VACA.
Your fine in Mexico... esp if your going to a tourist part such as Cancun, Riveria Maya, Cabo, and even Mexico City.

Lol. OK, I'm going to be COMPLETELY honest. My parents are Mexican and I travel to Mexico every year. The tourist areas are generally VERY safe- HOWEVER..... last year when I was in Acapulco I was on a public bus and there were military men with guns at the ready watching our bus. I'm a NYC city girl and pretty tough but that was NOT a good feeling. The state of Guerrero (where Acapulco is located) was the center of a drug war at the time. They were obviously looking for someone.
SO...things can happen- as they can anywhere. If you are going to Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Ixtapa ect...you're fine. Places that don't have all inclusive resorts where people roam all around - like Acapulco, I would caution non-Spanish speakers.

ive read a lot of stories recently about americans being killed but that happens near the border i think....also a lot of mexicans are killed as well....its really sad actually reading new stories about it.....resorts are different though - so i wouldn't worry to much - i just wouldn't leave your resort unless you are going on a tour
