that is really strange guys...not good....i took a disaster readiness class once and they were totally like beware of smells that are smelled for miles..sorry i feel like the bearer of bad news...but that is scary!!!
Wait whats that mean?
they had a whole thing about disasters like chemical things blowing up or even attacks...to be very careful when something can be smelled for miles...stay indoors until it is identifed..
keep in mind ...it a worst case scenario thing...i should have never taken that class...i am paranoid about everything now...

Re: ANyone else smell that smell?
I live in Forest Hills also and at 8:30am when I left my buidling it smelled like something was burning, but it wasn't very strong.
I'm neurotic so I checked to see if smoke was coming anywhere from my buidling and nothing.

Re: ANyone else smell that smell?
This is from News 12...
06/04/08) EAST MEADOW - An odd burning smell has some Long Islanders worried Wednesday, and officials can’t seem to nail down the source.
Calls came into News 12 Long Island from people in both Suffolk and Nassau counties describing it as a burning rubber smell.
“It stunk. It smelled like a fire,” says Lisa Friedrich, of East Meadow.
Gerald Granger, of Hempstead, says, “It was like a rubber smell, like something burning.”
Nassau County officials told News 12 that an industrial fire in Jersey City, N.J., was to blame for the stench. However, that couldn’t be confirmed.

From Newsday....
N.J. fire suspected source of LI smell
Emergency management officials said a burning smell reported along Long Island's South Shore on Wednesday morning most likely stemmed from a New Jersey house fire.
Fire departments in Hewlett and Malverne began getting calls about the smell at about 7:15 a.m., said James Callahan, Nassau's commissioner of the Nassau Office of Emergency Management.
The odor, which some said smelled like burning rubber or plastic, then moved east and north, prompting similar calls to fire departments in Babylon and Islip, he said.
None of the Long Island fire departments dispatched to investigate the source of the smell found anything, Callahan said.
Fire and emergency management officials in New York City, which received inquiries from residents along the Brooklyn and Queens shorelines, told Callahan that they thought the odor stemmed from a large house fire in Jersey City.
The blaze started around 11 p.m. Tuesday and raged for two hours before fightfighters brought it under control, according to WNBC.
Nassau health officials are monitoring local hospitals for people complaining of respiratory problems; none has turned up so far, Callahan said.

Re: ANyone else smell that smell?
I teach in Babylon Village. In the middle of final review, one of my 7th graders announced that he smelled a burning smell this morning and he was wondering if there was a forest fire. I thought that was strange until later when I was sitting at my desk next to the open window, and I smelled it, too!
