I had it done in 1997 - And I LOVE it! My eyes were really bad - if I'm not mistaken, I think my contact prescription were like -8.5 & -8. It's been a while though so I'm not positive, but I couldn't see anything. DH would sit like less than a foot away from me and stick his tounge out at me and I couldn't tell at all.
The surgery was a little weird, but very quick and as soon as I got up to walk into the other room, I could totally see- DH tried making the face at me and I could see it!!
My vision is not quite 20/20, but good enough that my eye doctor tells me that he doesn't think I need to wear anything unless I want to - in fact he always makes a point to tell me that he thinks it's better because it may keep me from needing reading glasses as I age (or at least make it happen later).
I had minimal pain - just about an hour or so after the surgery my eyes started to sting a lot and I couldn't have ANY light at all. But, it only lasted a couple of hours and then I was pretty much fine. I don't think my eyes bother me any more than they used to - a litle dry sometimes, but I think that used to happen more with contacts. I really have to say it was one of the best things I have ever done. I know a few other people who have done it and they all love it- I don't know anyone personally who has had real problems, but, honestly, had I heard more about it before I did it, I may not have gone through with it myself. I think you just need to make sure you get a VERY experienced doctor and make certain you are a good candidate for it - my best friend wants it sooo bad, but they told her because of the shape of her cornea and the fact that she has very large pupils, she's not a good candidate.
