Re: Anyone ever refuse to follow their dr's advice?
I switched pills against doctor's advice, from brand name to generic. He wrote in his notes that.

Depends what you are refusing to do- I have refused to take medication a dr other than my regular dr prescribed b/c either my regular dr told me NO don't take it - or the pharmacist told me it wouldn't mix with something else I was taking.
Alina I'm surprised that a pharmacist would fill a prescription that your dr wrote DAW (dispense as written) on - they are not supposed to allow you to get generic when they write that - however, if DAW was not written on your script then it is not really not following directions b/c many places will automatically give you generic when it is not written in

Christine, I had the doctor change my prescription based on what I wanted. I wanted to switch from synthroid to levoxyl, b/c synthroid is not FDA approved, etc... Although doc said its appropriate and was a bit against levoxyl, I got him to switch me, and he made a note on my file that I switched to levoxyl on my own wish.

See to me that is totally reasonable and I would not consider that to be not following drs orders since it was discussed with him

Doctors are NOT Gods. You and only you can make the final decision as to what is best for you. You need to ask for more than one opinion on major things and ask for explainations of terms, medicines, tests.
My grandmother used to tell me that she would never question a doctor and I never understood that. I believe in researching things myself, learning about the situation and alternate therapies/meds etc...
BUT I also believe in your gut instinct. I have to trust the medical professionals that I chose. I have to know that when I ask a question they tell me the truth. If my gut tells me something is just not right I listen and find a new doctor.

Re: Anyone ever refuse to follow their dr's advice?
every dentist I go to tells me to get my wisdom teeth removed asap. But until they're a problem, I'm not doing it - does that count?
Also, my gyn recommended not taking cipro anymore for UTI's but boy do they work fast when I need them
When my pap came back abnormal, I requested a second one before going for the recommended colposcopy (there are a lot of mistakes made with paps). Unfortunately I had to have the procedure anyway, but I felt better knowing I double checked.

Re: Anyone ever refuse to follow their dr's advice?
I have ignored my doctor's advice. He put me on Zocor for high cholesterol a little over a month ago--he told me diet and exercise won't help alone because it's genetic. The meds can cause liver damage--so I've decided to try just diet and exercise for a while to see if there really is improvement!

Leelee, my mom just did this. She refused to take drugs, and her doc. knows about it. She went on a super strict diet, and lost at least 2 sizes if not more. She looks and feels better. Her cholesterol moved a bit, but not enough. But since you're younger than my mom it may work better for you.
But cut out all the red meat from your diet, and pork two. those are biggies on cholesterol

LeeLee - FYI I work for the company that makes Zocor. I can get you more info on it if you need.

This is great to know Alina! I've been *almost* super-strict and have lost 10 pounds! I don't eat red meat only chicken--so that's also good to hear! I must admit though...I'm soooo sick of roasted veggies and baked chicken. I just want to eat a hot fudge sundae!!!!
Best of luck to your mom!! I figured, it there's no dent in my cholesterol, I'll then consider trying the meds.

LeeLee - you might also want to ask your Dr. about Zetia - it's a new drug that prohibits the body from absorbing too much cholesterol - I can get you some info on that too. Fewer liver problems....

Re: Anyone ever refuse to follow their dr's advice?
it is relatively new - came out in the last year or so
instead of breaking up the cholesterol it actuall prevents absorption - pretty cool stuff

Re: Anyone ever refuse to follow their dr's advice?
I agree with you that I would try diet and exercise first, but unfortunatly due to genetics, there are some people that will still have high cholesterol. Yes the meds can cause liver damage, but so does tylenol! My dad has been on that for a few years and he gets his liver enzymes checked every 3 months, and no problems so far. On a side note, my father had high cholesterol for a long time, did the diet, exercise and Zocor thing, all without budging it at all. (My father is in good shape, so obesity is not the issue). Turns out, they discover he has type II diabetes. It all makes sense. Once the diabetic meds start, the cholesterol plummets. The control of your sugar and the cholesterol levels are related. This may not be an issue for us youngin's, but for those who are 45 or older, this is a good possibility.

Dr's are human beings and human beings make mistakes! I agree with Michele go with your gut
