We're starting to look at houses and are trying to narrow down the neighborhoods we like.
Can anyone tell us anything about Baldwin? Is it safe? Schools? Etc.? Any areas of Baldwin to avoid?

Baldwin all in all is a good area. My sister just moved there and I have a few friends who live there as well. As far as area I am not sure but they both live right off of Atlantic ave if that helps. Good luck.

Depends on the area... some parts are not bad and some are great. Depends where it is. But the school are pretty good from what I heard most of my friends that lived there went to private school though and only did regular high school which they are all successful!

FWIW, we're only interested in the schools so far as property value and resale is concerned. We have no children and don't even plan to use the schools.

Definitely depends on the area, but it is not as great as it used to be in all areas. The schools used to be much better. FH lives there and you could see the difference in the schools from when he graduated HS to when his little sister graduated HS (6 years difference). It's not a bad place to live, but we definitely will not be look for houses there.

I live in Baldwin and FH is from the area...any specific questions let me know. The areas that are nice are towards the south...south of merrick ave
There's a change right around merrick avenue but it's a nice place to live. I'm in the next town over. As long as you stay south of merrick ave you should see some nice houses in a good neighborhood.

We live in Lynbrook now on the border or E. Rockaway and would prefer to stay where we are... we just had some houses meeting our criteria pop up in Baldwin and were curious to know what it's like.
Good to know about staying south of Merrick...

I have lived there for the last 14 years. The area is fine. There are two main parts North Baldwin and Baldwin Harbor. The Harbor contains some bigger houses. The schools are OK. Nothing great but not bad.
I do not feel unsafe in Baldwin.

Baldwin harbor is the nicer part, south of Merrick Road. The elementary schools are ok but the HS isnt so great anymore...if you are looking in that area you might also want to try Rockvlle centre, they have a really good school district

I have lived in Baldwin my whole life, and I have to say it was a great place to grow up..We live in North Baldwin, but righ ton top of the RVC border. As for the schools the elementary schools are real good as is the middle school, the high school leaves a little something to be desired, but is still a real nice place. My BM just moved to baldwin, right off of Atlantic.. its a great little area, quiet.. but atlantic gets INSANE during the day. I also have a friend who lives right off of merrick rd by the Coral house.... gorgeous over there too. Im not sure about the school district though

i grew up in Baldwin. It hgas defintiely changed in the past 10 years, but unfortunately, people think that just because more people of color have moved in, the whole town has gone to crap... that is not true.
when i went through baldwin schools, i feel i got a great education, the schools are still good, but i think overall there are demographic, economic and social changes in the 'typical' family, so the schools have changed.
north of sunrise highway is more congested... grand ave. has changed... businesses don't seem to stay...but the houses in north baldwin are adorable... a lot of Tudors and small capes. The neighborhood near PLaza school and on the border of RVC is nice.
South of Merrick Road is much quieter... and Milburn School area is nice and quiet.... South of Atlantic Ave. is even quieter. . . larger houses and NO businesses south of Atlantic. Also close to Baldwin Park and the Great South Bay.... house prices are higher in the harbor.
Taxes are high like anywhere on LI.... my parents pay over $9K...they're between Merrick and Atlantic. HTH....FM if you have any questions....

Baldwin has beautiful homes, especially in the Harbor area, but the neighborhood has definitely changed. I believe the elementary schools are good, but I hear mixed things about the HS. Good luck with your search!!
