Just so you girls know NY is not a community property state...so any inheritance that you receive is yours and yours alone in the event of a D-word (don't even wanna say it haha).

However if you plan on getting any educational degrees after you are married, those degrees become 'community' property and your FH would be eligible for a share of the increase in salary you get from having a higher degree (and vice versa)

For credibility purposes I know all this because my Mom is a lawyer

hmm.. the degree might be another reason if i ever get my butt in gear to get my doctorate.

hmmm i think we may- FH has share in family business and want to protect his brothers and cousins in the even i go mental and try to take it from him .... i dont like the idea bc i know not to take what's not mine but whatever.

Not doing one, and even if FH asked, I would never. I have my own personal opinions on the subject.

Like someone else said, whats mine is his now and vice versa.

No, we aren't. It's not an issue. I know we're going to be together forever. Maybe that sounds naive, but when you know, you know. I don't mean to insult anyone by saying that though; I'm completely supportive if people choose to do that. Pre-nups are just not for me though.

Before we became engaged, FH would always say he wants a pre-nup... but since we've been engaged he hasn't brought it up.
I could care less if we have one or not. we're not millionaires, he makes a little more then I do so its not like we'd be at war.

what if the property i receive is in NJ or if FH and i leave NY?

As long as you live in NY it doesn't matter where the property is...if you leave NY and happen to get D-worded in another state then the laws of that state apply, not NY laws.

no we don't plan on getting one....neither of us have any real assets or anything so we dont really need one. I could def see doing it though if one person was coming into the marriage with a lot of money/assets.

I dont personally believe in pre-nups marriage in my mind is a forever thing.

FH and I have discussed this. We are not getting one but have agreed that in the event of D-word, we will go through a mediator instead of going head first into it all.

My parents went through this about 5 years ago, and they didn't have one and my dad complains everyday how my mom 'took everything' (even though he didn't really have anything before they got married, it was built up between that). It's not completely true, but the process may have been a lot easier had they already had one or had they gone through a mediator. But my parent's divorce was an ugly one.

Nope... when FH and I first met, he said he would never get married without one and I said I would never get married with one... Now when I joke around about getting that pre-nup (which i truly wouldn't ever do), he just tells me to be quiet... YAY!

We are not...but we don't have any significant assets to protect. If I did, I think I would get one.

I don't think it can hurt anything.

FH and I have already signed one. My father insisted on it otherwise he would not have paid for the wedding or given us money for our house. My parents paid for about 1/4 of the house and the other 1/4 of the house was purchased from money that I inherited from my grandparents. Basically, it insures my part of the house in case anything happens (which includes death on either part). It gives him more as we are together longer, when children are involved and when the house is sold...

We signed it and put it away. Hopefully we'll never have to look at it again!

no - lately I have been thinking we should but I am just not going to bother

if we get divorced I will just deal with everything than and if it is messy oh well

I actually havent decided. Our house is actually mine. While we bought it together...it's all in my name...so I dont need to worry about that (pre-marital property). Neither of us will inherit much...if anything. So I'm not really sure we need one. I make more,,,but i doubt he would try to get anything...b/c he hasnt tried once to get money from his ex and he has custody of his two kids...and she pays zero.
