the bar is open 5 hours for me..,.and I would not have it any other way...
I was just wondering...because I was talking weddings with a few people out here in RI and they asked if it was open bar...(not being nosy in any sense, just in conversation) I said absolutely...they told me they only had open bar for cocktail hour....
IN the few places I met with, bar was included in the price, and I never thought to ask if I coudl ahve a cash bar...it just never entered my mind...
No offense to anyone who is doing a cash bar, maybe it saves you money...but I just could not bear to ask my guests to pay for their drinks....
I was just wondering if anyone is having a cash bar, or if it was jsut different for different states....(I was talking to friends from MA and RI)

I think here in the NY metro area...it's a given that it will be open bar...in other parts of the country...it's not.

Holly, I know from my girlfriends up in your neck of the woods that the norm in RI and MA is to have a cash bar. It's just different. Don't forget, that's also the area I was told to come back six months before my wedding to look for a gown, so it's like a whole different world up there!

I am def. having open bar... but I did go to a wedding all the way upstate and it was a cash bar... I think in this area its pretty standard to have an open bar... all the catering halls I visited didn't even talk about a cash bar...

Actually, a girlfriend of mine from the Cape was just telling me the other night that she is looking for places there to get married, and there is a 4,000 site fee for almost ALL the catering facilities! Even the really small crappy ones, AND cash bars! TOTALLY different.

As far as I heard, the cash bar thing was popular in many states outside of NY. I saw it done in MA and heard it done in PA.

Re: ANyone having a Cash BAR>?
I'm from Arizona, and while I have never been to a wedding with a cash bar, open bar is very rare. Usually just wine and beer served. Altogether, I have found NY weddings to be more formal than on the west coast.

Re: ANyone having a Cash BAR>?
I went to a wedding in Indiana and it was open bar, but the brides parents have a lot of money and it was a nice affair.
My aunt and uncle went to a wedding in North Carolina and all they served were finger sandwiches, cake, and unspiked punch. They had to go out to dinner after the wedding - they were starving!

Re: ANyone having a Cash BAR>?
I suppose if there really wasn't money for it - then OK. I do think that other things should be cut first though. I went to a wedding in Rochester once that was cash bar and really surprising because they went all out for most things at the wedding. I really would have preferred fewer flowers and not had a cash bar. I just think it's tacky (and I don't ever have more than one drink so it's not a matter of me laying out the money for the drink)
It's definitely a regional thing.
