changing your last name?

I am looking forward to changing it...but all those damn papers to fill out

The DMV part is easy...but I have a house and to change my mortgage is going to cost me $$$$$

FH knows I don't wanna change but I will cuz I have too....just his last name is soooo longggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg

has 11 letters...and nobody ever pronounces it right...

I'll probably hyphenate. My dad is the 'last of the mohicans'. He had two brothers that died when they were young. My father means so much to me, that I want to at least honor him by keeping his name alive for one last generation.

i'm having mixed feelings. For the longest time i couldn't wait to change my name because i hate it!!!
but i am also the last of us. I am an only child. And FH's family (his fathers side) is freakin insane that i don't want to be associated with them! LOL

but it is important that I take his name... to both me and him.

forgot to say--- plus ive been my last name for 28 years... its going to be tough to part with it. Like i won't be me anymore.

its soo hard to do that...
my sister told me that on her honeymoon...when they got to hawaii...and she started crying...and her dh was like whats the matter with u...we're in paradise and ur ? she told me she was crying cuz of the name change...as if someone took her identity...

Yeah- I'm so torn on this one.

I want to keep mine, but I do kind fo liek the idea of bieng mr & mrs.
I kinda want to be Heather B----
but Mrs. L------
only in the context of Mr & Mrs. L------
not by itself--that's FMIL's name, esp she she is a teacher & is known by that.

Also, I don't really know how to pronounce his last name. Different people in the family prounce it different ways. FH usually says it phoentically, so people spell it right, but that's definitely not how its pronounced.

I didn't want to change my last name but when I brought this up to FH he got really angry. He is very traditional in that aspect and said that he couldn't see himself marrying someone if they wouldn't take his name, he feels it brings more unity to the marriage. We actually almost broke up because of it. I decided that my last name isn't worth losing him so I am going to hyphenate it (even though it sounds like a tongue twister) legally and use his name socially, keeping my name professionialy.

That's the opposite of my situation... I presently have an 11-letter long Italian last name, and my married name will be a 7-lettered Greek one... unfortunately both our names are constantly pronounced WRONG so its not like I won't have to s-p-e-l-l it out still, anyhow!

Funny enough, I always SWORE I would never give up my maiden name .. I truly do think it sounds better with my first name. That is, until I met FH. Now I am looking forward to changing it, actually. Funny how love changes some things, sometimes

Ugh...this is something we are still debating. I will probably just make my name a legal middle name...I don't really want to hyphenate...my last name is pretty long. I do like the idea of being mr. and mrs...however, I kind of feel like I am losing my identity...and I like my last name SOOOO much better!!!

i agree...o i like that idea legally making my current last name my middle name....
i told FH i want to give our children middle names of my current last name! he still thinks i'm kidding.
