I am going to change my name so that we are a 'family unit' but I think it sucks that society is set up this way, because I do think it's weird to give your name up.

I am taking his, but not excited about all the paperwork, and stupid stuff like my email addresses changing (now they are my first and last name). Both of our names are nice and short!

I am so glad other people are having a problem with this. I never even thought about keeping my name because it means a lot to both FI and I that we will have the same last name and be a family.

I am Irish and have a very Irish first and last name. My FI has a very Italian name. I feel like I am becoming Italian. I want to stay Irish!!!

i'm having mixed feelings. For the longest time i couldn't wait to change my name because i hate it!!!
but i am also the last of us. I am an only child. And FH's family (his fathers side) is freakin insane that i don't want to be associated with them! LOL

but it is important that I take his name... to both me and him.

forgot to say--- plus ive been my last name for 28 years... its going to be tough to part with it. Like i won't be me anymore.

I could have written that myself, except for the part about FH's family.

The only place I'm keeping my maiden name is on my school records because I want my degree to have my dad's name on it since he's supported my education more than anyone else.

I don't want to insult anyone's choices. I think everyone shoudl do what they want..

Having said that, I think it's screwed up that women are expected to change their names. FH says it would mena a lot to him for us to have the same name. If he's the one whoc ares so much HE should change HIS name. I mena, men dont even change their title., and yet women are expected to announce by thier name, the one thing that identifies them, not only that they are married, but to whom.

I also find it weird that most women don't even think about, or don't want to, but do it anyway. There has to be some other alternative. it can't stay this way forever.

I just thought of something else - I feel like when I let go of my last name I will be letting go a part of my father. Is that weird???

I may have to hyphenate!

When I married the first time, I didn't change it. He was fromSpain and we lived there. The custom there is to keep your own name. When you have children, they have 2 last names -- the father's first last name then the mother's first last name. My ex-MIL was Ana Castillo Jimenez. My ex-FIL was Paco Alonso Morales. My ex was Paco Alonso Castillo, which is nice because it keeps oth names going. Had we had a son, his name would have been....Paco Alonso Gallagher!! How's that one??? Good thing it never happened...kid would have had a complex as no one in Spain could EVER pronounce my last name!!

I don't really mind it. I have never been crazy about my last name and FI's isn't much better...lol. It will be really weird getting used to a new name though.

Re: Anyone NOT Excited about this part...

I love my last name, but I am changing it anyway. I don't want to do the hyphen thing because it is so long and confusing. I like my future last nam as well and it means so much to have the same last name - like you are really your own little family - I guess it would be nice if he would change to mine but I don't think that will happen...

Oh yeah - my mom gave all of her kids her maiden name as our middle name and I will probably do the same...

I've kept my name at work and go by his socially. This was the compromise that we came up with but I promised when we had kids, I would only go by his name.

I'm not changing my name. I don't mind being calle Mrs.______. But I'm keeping my last name legally. I would feel really weird changing it. I like having an Italian name and I feel like I would be losing a piece of my cultural identity too.

My Italian family thinks I am nuts and just trying to buck tradition. I think its so funny that one generation off the boat they've already forgotten that in Italy women don't change their last names. Your dad's name lets every one know who you are...

I'm looking forward to changing it, even though it will be much longer.

Re: Anyone NOT Excited about this part...

fh JUST ASKED ME ABOUT THAT THIS MORNING....I have too much time invested in me already professionally etc....so we agreed I would hyphenate for now and gradually change it on all of the important documents...it's too much paperwork and a hassle!
