I've already decided to put one half hour earlier on my invites because many of my family are notorious for being late. Some reception hall bms have told me to say an hour early-- do you think that's too early? I do have quite a few people coming from NJ to LI, so I'm wondering if I should put an hour earlier in case they get lost. Also, there will be refreshments and pastries if they do get there early.
For the prompt people, I will let them know the correct start time.
What do you think?
edited to add: Thanks everyone for your thoughts. So I'm keeping it 1/2 hr early since I'm getting married at the hall. I just hope the really late ones don't walk in the middle of my ceremony!

Re: Anyone putting earlier time on invites?
I am planning on making the ceremony time 30 mins early, but having the reception time remain the same, because some people will not be attending the church. I know my family will start complaining 'when are we going in bla bla'. Cocktail hour is to kind of stall the guests...its really up to you

We're putting 11 and the ceremony begins at 11:30, For those who are there early, they will get to witness the signing of the Ketubah!

Re: Anyone putting earlier time on invites?
My friend did that and the church got upset with her that he almost didn't marry them. And it was only by half an hour. But people still didn't show up on time for the reception so she came out an hour later and made us all wait.

Yes, I'm putting half hour earlier because my ceremony and reception is at the RH.

Re: Anyone putting earlier time on invites?
we are getting married at our hall and are listing 30 min before our ceremony start time. I will be walking down the aisle at 11:30, so I want everyone there and seated by then. I don't want 50 people getting there at 11:28, then waiting for valet, walking to the room, getting seated, etc. Our hall serves champagne with strawberries to people who come early, and there is a lobby area for them to mingle for a few minutes before being seated.
Better safe than sorry.. also leaves leeway in case people get lost

Re: Anyone putting earlier time on invites?
I think an hour is way to early. I was considering putting an earlier start time because my ceremony is at the RH. The photographer said to make it 1/2 hour earlier, then the officiant said I didn't need to do that. I was thinking maybe 15 min?

Re: Anyone putting earlier time on invites?
Be very careful about putting an earlier time if you are getting married at a church-they get VERY upset with this.
If you are getting married at your RH make sure that they will be able to accomodate those that do show up ON TIME (1 hour early) .... otherwise your guests maynot be so happy about having to wait an hour

Re: Anyone putting earlier time on invites?
I think an hour is too early. People might be annoyed at having to sit around for an hour. We are getting married at the RH, and the invite is called for 30 minutes before. Our RH is providing refreshments for the guests during that time.

We are putting a half hour early on ours. FH's family is notorious for being late. JT has a wine and cheese room that opens a half hour before the ceremony.

Re: Anyone putting earlier time on invites?
i think 1 hour is too early b/c some ppl show up early as is.
If you put 1/2 hour and they show up 1/2 early- they will wait a hour.
We just put 1/2 hour and out RH is havign a coffee reception for them. beginning 1/2 hour early
