Anyone' s Parents Not Paying?

Original post by siffleuse319

What's your story? My parents aren't paying for anything and I feel sad for them, because I know they would if they could. I keep telling my mother that I wouldn't accept it anyway because I've been out on my own for so long now. But it still pains me to hear the sorrow in her voice.

Fh and I are paying for everything ourselves. Mom bought me my dress and accessories. We are an older couple. Although it's my first wedding, I would not feel comfortable with my mom contributing. She gives us all the love in the world which is worth so much more than money.

FH and I are paying for it ourselves... i dont feel empowered... i feel broke... i'm even bagging my own lunch to work to save 40K in 1 yr.

maybe i will feel empowered after it all

I definitely feel broke...we just bought our first house too. But there is something about knowing that we are doing it on our own. Maybe because I'm only 25 and I don't have to rely on my parents anymore for anything...

we're paying for everything...and I mean everrrrything. I know that I will feel that pride once the day comes...I just need to survive this process to get there.

With the combined effort of everyone in our families, (sister in law, mother in law, mom, 2nd mom, dad, maid of honor, grandmom, and dh) we were able to have a wedding/shower...Compared to other weddings..our wedding was very low budget..but for people who don't have money like that...we had a nice wedding...

We are paying for the majority of the wedding ourselves. My parents aren't really in a position to help out which is completely fine with me, I just feel bad because I know they would like to. My fiance's parents have offered to pay for our flowers/centerpieces/favors, which is definately helpful. But I really don't mind doing it on our own, because then we don't have to worry about what everyone else wants. Now if you were to ask me that question again in 8-9 months, I might feel differently with all of the payments being due, LOL!

We paid for the majority of it. Our parents gave us generous checks after the wedding which we weren't expecting at all...going straight into the 'house' fund.

Going into it though, we didn't want the help. We are adults. They helped us through college and this was our chance to show appreciation for our family and friends that helped us along the way.

And as Melissa said, there is definitely a sense of pride that you feel at the end of the night when you look around at your happy guests and you can say that you planned it, you laid it all out, and you paid for it.

Re: Anyone' s Parents Not Paying?

DH and I paid for our entire wedding. My mom bought my dress as a gift and later gave us a monetary gift which we were SOOOO appreciative of, especially because my mom works her butt off but doesn't make a lot of money. DH's parents are both retired and were not able to help with the wedding at all, but we totally understood.

In the end, we are extremely proud that we paid for our entire wedding. We did charge our honeymoon, but we used part of our gifts from the wedding to pay off half and are paying the rest month by month. It's hard, especially because I had considerable debt before the wedding and still do, but we spent our entire engaged year economizing and have continued with that so we can try to work down the overall credit cards debt - but it's a great feeling to know that we don't have any wedding debt!

FH and I are paying for the vast majority of our wedding., simply b/c it would be too much of a burden on my parent financially and I could never put them in that position.

ours is also a group effort.

His side is paying 1/3rd of the total wedding cost + RD and bought us all of our good china, and the formal stemware

My side is paying 1/3rd of the total cost + they paid for the e-dinner, and they are paying for the shower.

FH and I are paying 1/3rd of the total cost + honeymoon.

I feel like there was no other way, especially with saving for a home....

Me too --I didn't even want her to pay for my dress, but she insisted and the one I picked out was super-inexpensive. I like planning and paying for everything with DH. We are older and it feels wierd to take money from people. We are both professionals and make a decent living. I don't want to have any part of planning the shower, though, I feel wierd planning a party for myself that's pretty much just set up so that people can buy us gifts. I kind of feel uncomfortable with having a shower at all, but I know that we have a lot of people in our lives who are very happy for us and want to give us presents! I guess I'm the same way for others, so when the time comes I'll just enjoy it!

My FH and I are paying for most of the wedding too....My Mother is a single mom and has been very helpful to my brother and I All our lives. My father died when I was 13. So she is going us some money and actually paying for my dress..Only because I lucked out it it is not costing me a fortune.....

So as for the church...I Talked my 'step' father to pay for that...I Cannot believe $800 has to go to the church....

As for FMIL she threw is an enjoyment party and I think that is all she is contributing....

I agree I like the fact that I can do what I want because we are paying for it...That Included how many to invite!!!!

at first i was disappointed that nobody could help us (i dont know why i was disappointed - i think i figured it out by age 10 that i would have to pay for my own wedding )

but after getting into the planning i wouldnt want it any other way - after actually being engaged and planning with FH it doesnt really make sense to me anymore to have my parents (or his) pay for any of it - it only seems right that FH and I are paying for the wedding - because its 'ours' - i think a part of that excitement would be taken away if someone else was footing the bill b/c it wouldn't be so much 'ours' anymore.....its a nice feeling knowing that we are able to afford to have such a wonderful wedding and have everything that we want - and do it on our own.....its a really good feeling - and i know it will be even better the day of the wedding when we look around and can say 'we did this' and we did without any help!

FH and I are also paying for most of our wedding. My parents always told me that they would not be able to help us and I understood that. Once I got engaged, my dad offered a certain amount that some may consider small but to us, it is a lot and we appreciate it so much! I know my parents would give more if they could. It is hard for FH and I because we are somewhat young and I just graduated college. However, we are ready to get married and we will make this happen on our own!

my parents' are trying to match for me what they did for my brother a few years ago - which I completely understand. They've always been VERY fair.

They are paying for video & flowers....which is what they did for him & his wife...

The rest is ALL US - his parents are giving little to nothing.

My parents are paying for our hall! Everything else we are taking care of! Weddings are so expensive these days! They are not what they used to be 10 years ago! I keep imagining how much things are gonna cost when our kids get married!..LOL
