Sorry this post is not wedding related but i needed to vent. I can't believe a year ago all of us were planning our weddings and now the year is coming to a close.
I think i've been more busy since the wedding the before the wedding, if you believe that! So DH & I come back from our honeymoon and a few weeks later my job has announced they are relocating out of state. DH's job and our families are here so relocating is not an option. SOO that means i'm starting to look for a new job. I think looking for a job when your not 'quitting' your current job is rough. I keep telling myself change is good and everything happens for a reason so hopefully things work out.
Question: Im looking for jobs on long island (FYI - i'm a retail merchandise planner) but if i can't find anything on the island i'll start to looking in the city where there are more opportunities. My only reservation is the commute. Does anyone work in the city or take a train to work everyday? I'm looking for insight on the commute and if its worth it.
Sorry for the vent girls.

Re: Anyone work in the city?
ugghhh im sorry you're going through this
i commuted from huntington to the city for years and it was rough in the beginning, but you get used to it
LIRR s u c k s every once in a while but for the most part, it's pretty reliable. i work on LI now, and it would take a lot of money for me to have to change jobs to go to the city
so sorry you have to make the shift

I used to commute from Bethpage to Mill Basin Bklyn. It can be a b*tch but you do get used to it and once you get into a groove its smooth sailing.

Well im also thinking long term too... one day we plan to have kids. DH & I work opposite schedules so if the trains ever bread down i can't call DH to pick me up, i'll be on my own to figure it out.

Re: Anyone work in the city?
I've commuted to and from the city for almost 5 years now. This past year only has been from Queens, but it's close to the Nassau border. The rest of the time was from Farmingdale.
Anyway, in all the times that the LIRR didn't run or was delayed or whatever, I NEVER called anyone to pick me up. You just kind of have to hang around and wait.
You learn the ins and outs of the system pretty quickly. It's rare that ALL the lines are not running... it's usually a signal problem on a particular track, which means you can take a different train to a location that's passed the problem on the tracks and get home that way.
I can say that between the LIRR and the Subway, I prefer the subway, but only from a time and cost standpoint. For all other reasons (cleanliness, space, etc.) the LIRR is better.
I know of many peoople who commute from LI to the City and back, who are married with families. It's definitely possible and the biggest factor is probably salary. Usually salaries in NYC are higher.
So, you'll have to decide what's most important to you, I guess. But if you're worried about needing a ride from Penn Station, that really won't happen.

Re: Anyone work in the city?
I live in Port Washington and commute into the city. It's not too bad, about 45 minutes in the AM. Just be prepared that if there is a snow storm there is atleast 24 hours where you probably can't get in because the LIRR seems to shut down everytime it snows. I hate commuting into the city though, I'd rather work in Long Island.

Re: Anyone work in the city?
*Crashing* I have a friend who commutes from Smithtown (drives to Deer Park and takes the train from there), and one of her biggest saving graces is that her office is right near Herald Square, practically across the street from the Penn Station.
However, it pays off for her because she loves her home in Smithtown and it's close to her family and that's what matters most to her and her DH. So the time she spends is really just a means to an end - to pay the bills for a place she loves and can spend her time enjoying.
Good luck on your job search

Re: Anyone work in the city?
I'm sorry to hear about your job. I hope you find something soon.
To answer your question, I commute every day (for the last 4+ years) from Huntington to NYC. It's VERY draining, to say the least.

Re: Anyone work in the city?
i've been commuting into the city for 10 years now (college and work) and i love it. i don't have to deal with traffic. i live in great neck, which is on the port washington line, which luckily is one of the best train lines... but even so, there are hiccups, but it's not that awful. you can read, sleep, do work and suddenly you're home! it's something to get used to, but it's not that bad.
