Anyone writing their own vows or have been to a ceremony where someone did...
I am considering doing this so I can really personalize our ceremony. I normally dont like public speaking but might be able to....I will have notes up with me....but dont want to sound like I am reading from paper!
Hmmmm just wanted to see what you thought if you've seen it done.

Hamptonsbride did her own vows, FM her she may be able to help you better.
I think regardless people always sound like they are reading from paper-even if they are the traditional vows you are repeating them.

Re: Anyone writing their own vows or have been to a ceremony where someone did...
We wrote our own ows, actually we wrote our WHOLE ceremony.
We wrote vows that we both said to each other so that we were 'vowing'/ 'promising' the same thing!
Everyone loved it and I loved saying them becaue they were so unique to us!! I knew I would be too nervous to read them so the minister said it in a low voice and I repeated vice versa
Here were our vows if you need a litle inspiration:
I (name) choose you (name) to be my eternal partner in life, and to you I promise this: I will be your comrade in adventure, your ally in conflict, your student and your teacher. I will be your strength in need, your understanding in confusion, your consolation in disappointment, your greatest fan and your sincerest critic. I will be your lover and companion, your partner in parenthood, but most of all, I will be your friend. From this day forward you shall never again walk alone, for my heart will be your shelter, and my arms will be your home. I promise this to you in a commitment made in love, kept in faith, and eternally made new As I give to you now my hand to hold, I give to you my life to keep.

I think we are going to write our own vows as well...I think it is totally fine if you read from paper. I know I will be too nervous to remember anything anyways! I think anything that you write and make your own would be special. I go back and forth between writing them together and writing them individually and surprising each other, not sure what we will end up doing.

I've been to a wedding where they've done this, nobody expects an eloquent speech (like Peggie said, even repeating normal vows sounds like reading ). Besides the bride is usually sobbing through it and the groom's vows usually have a funny joke or they end up crying too

Re: Anyone writing their own vows or have been to a ceremony where someone did...
We wrote our own vows and it was honestly my most favorite part of the whole wedding. We didn't share them with each other before and that made it even more special. We both read from a paper because we were nervous, but we had both practiced alot before so it didn't sound like we were reading. Here are mine:
'From the moment that I first laid eyes on you, I knew that fate had brought us together. You have shown me unconditional love, honesty and respect and I fall more in love with you every day. You are my lover, my soul mate, my partner in crime and my best friend and I can't imagine my life without you. Thank you for loving me and for your constant dedication to our life together.
I promise to always listen to you, laugh with you, and love you with all I have until the end of time. I will never, even for one moment, forget how fortunate I am to have you by my side. I love you.'

We wrote our own vows. I took what we would normally say and made it all about us and our family. Added a few things and it worked out nice.
There are many books and websites about how to wite your own vows. I had a notebook, wrote little things down for a few months and compiled them into one paragraph.
Good Luck!

I am super emotional and actually I cried a ittle when we wrote them. I was sure I was going to be wreck reading them but surprisingly I didn't cry. THere were soooo many emotions that day and it was so surrreal that somehow I was able to keep my composure, I was grinning from ear to ear and couldn't take the smile off my face. My voice did waiver a little at the last line but I made it through.

Re: Anyone writing their own vows or have been to a ceremony where someone did...
we wroteour entire vows ourself. we had it all typed out on paper just in case we forgot something or got flustered midway.... it was awesome! and we had no idea what each other wrote till the day of!! I'm so bad at speaking in front of everyone and like 10 mins before the cermony, i started to freak out with nerves so I convinced DH not to read his either, he was like ok but then everyone else was like no way don't give them up, and I'm so happy we didn't it was soooo worth it! by the time we actually read our vows, i was ok with standing there, we were up there a while. Good Luck!
