my brother works in bayshore schools. The schools have gotten much better in recent years. Take a look at newsdays school report card. The area, however, is not too nice. There are a few nice sections so you have to know where to look.

The area hasn't gotten great reviews and the schools haven't either.

I have a friend who lives there. She lives in one of the nicer areas... But then again that area is expensive!

The nice areas in Bayshore are also expensive. Beware of prices that seem to good to be true. My parents lived there for a couple of years and there are some nice areas, but they are older more expensive areas....

there are good and bad areas, some areas are truly really bad but two of my sisters live in the nicer areas ( by Target on Sunrise) and they love it, the schools are good too, two of my nephews are in the gifted program and speak spanish fluently at 7 and 10 years old....look around at the area well first is my opinion...

Re: Anyonw know anything about Bayshore? Why are the houses so cheap?
I was looking there but found a house in Selden. What I found is a lot of Bayshore is Brentwood schools which are not that good Bayshore schools have improved but from what I understand the HS is still not that great. Part of Bayshore is East Islip schools (off of Saxon Ave) but the house prices are 325,000 and up. My advice would be to try and stay away from Brentwood schools and if you can afford a house in the East Islip district definately look there (I have friends who live there and love it). Hope this helps.

we were looking over there and then were advised not to because the schools have gangs, & not high ratings (look in mlsli.com STAY above 65-), OR try to find something on the northshore

Re: Anyonw know anything about Bayshore? Why are the houses so cheap?
I bought a house in Bay Shore about 4 years ago. I am on the Bay Shore -Deer Park border. While my house was not expensive at the time, 125,000, it has since been valued at 215,000. Right now I have no children and we are even going to build up. That will increase the value of our home and by the time we do have children and they are ready to attend the schools, we can sell and move into our dream home. Long Island is expensive and you want to be able to do it right. My neighbors are wonderful and it's by no means unsafe. It depends on your neighborhood. But then again, isn't that true anywhere you go?

I think Bay Shore/Brentwood gets a bum-rap, pretty much all the time. Those areas/schools are not as bad as people would have you believe .. and usually they are people who have no actual experience with the neighborhoods or schools in those towns.

I agree. I graduated from Brentwood in 1994 and I still live there. I will admit that the neighborhood has changed since I was a kid but I don't think it is as bad as everyone makes it. When FH told me all of the stories he had heard about Brentwood HS, I laughed so hard (shootings and stabbings everyday, drug deals in the hallway). Brentwood is not a bad town, but for some reason, a lot of kids get sent from the city to live with their relatives in Brentwood (to calm them down) and instead of suburbia influencing them, they bring the city to the suburbs.
I could go on and on all day, but I will just end by saying that there are a lot of nice families in Brentwood, but the bad reputation has gone so far that no more nice families want to move in.

My FI grew up and his family still lives in Brentwood and his sister lives in Bayshore-Brentwood schools. My information came from people in that area and Newsday.com, where they rate the schools and the crime rate. My advice to anyone who is looking in an area that they are not familiar with is research. I did not mean to offend anyone.

there is a big part of bayshore that is NOT SO NICE....Brightwaters, which is a small town within Bayshore is pretty high class....and anything south of Montauk is OK I think....since it's near the water and those houses tend to be more expensive

That is hilarious. FH graduated from North Babylon and he said everyone in school used to say Brentwood was so scary. I guess every school has a reputation for an incident or two.

bay shore is like every other town on LI - there are good parts and there are bad parts. my cousin and her hubby live right by the target off of sunrise, and they love it! her and i walk to target all the time - where they are is a great little section.

Juliet,
Of course I SECOND your opinion being that I grew up there and went to school there as well... (Graduated in 95). Oddly enough, now I live in North Babylon, and I love it here... Go figure!
