Yesterday we did our first full day of reception hall shopping and I could not find a place I like!! All catering halls pretty much look the same and I feel that they're just not 'me'.
I loved the Carltun in Eisenhower Park but it was just too expensive. Does anyone know of any different types of wedding venues?, has anyone used a tent for their reception and where??
Thanks!!

i dont know how 'different' you are looking for, but i just had my wedding at atlantis marine world aquarium and it was beautiful and unique! you can have your ceremony inside or outside on the water, we had our coctail our indoor/outdoor with their nice white airconditioned tent area, the reception was inside the aquarium with the tables near the fish tanks and the place is just gorgeous! if you take a tour, they will show you video of weddings that took palce there to get a better feel for how they transform the place. i have pics on my website, www.laceyandmark.com, but we didnt get too many pics yet of the inside (though there are some from the rehearsal). good luck in your search for the perfect place!

Re: Anything other than a catering hall??
fi and i felt the same way. when we saw coindre hall, we knew it was the place. it's owned by the town and there are 3 caterers that cater out of it. here's a some link with more info:
we're using Andrews catering. A girl on theknot had her wedding there in June and used Phillip Stone and said there we excellent. from my experience, andrews was willing to customize menu/cost whereas lessings used the standard wedding menu that they use at all their locations and they were not willing to customize or work within our budget.
FM me if you want more info.

Re: Anything other than a catering hall??
The Nassau County Museum of Art is an old restored Mansion that allows outdoor weddings on the grounds under a tent. But I think that any wedding like that is going to be more expensive than a hall, but I could be wrong.

I don't know how much you're looking to spend but Lessings has some nice places. My sister got married at timber point cc and it is very nice and pretty reasonable.

Re: Anything other than a catering hall??
I very much didn't want the LI catering hall look and feel for my wedding. Here is a list of places that IMO don't fit the mold:
Any of the mansions: Coindre Hall, deSeversky, Bourne Mansion, either Vanderbuilt Mansion, Harrison House.
Riviera in Massapequa, Old Field Club in Old Field (between Setauket and Stony Brook), Atlantis Marine World, George Washington Manor, Stewart Manor Country Club, The Pavillion at Sunken Meadow, Sans Souci, and The Country Gardens at East Wind.

East Wind Caterers has 3 different places to choose from depending on what you like. I'm getting married at the Estate around next Christmas. I loved how it felt kinda country in there and cozy for the holidays. There is also the Country Gardens and the Inn. You should check them out.

why don't you try a vinyard out east, or maybe a beach kind of wedding at the crescent beach club.

I don't care for the catering hall look too much either - and I was unimpressed with a few of the places we saw at first.
My 1st wedding was at the Riviera in Massapequa - I love it there, and would do it there again, but it is too small for my 2nd wedding. Exposed beams, fireplaces, wreath on the wall - just so pretty.
I did, however, cry when we walked into the Milleridge Cottage, where my wedding will be. The Milleridge Inn is a very old restaurant, and they have small weddings there, but have 2 separate buildings on their grounds - the Milleridge Cottage and the Carriage House. I didn't see the carriage house, but the Cottage is so pretty - stained glass behind the bar, fireplace, just so elegant. And there's a little village there too, with the little toy store and bakery and a few other shops. Cute!

definitely a fantastic list!
I'd also add something though - Flowerfield is very unique, in my opinion.
It's on the expensive side though.

Re: Anything other than a catering hall??
Hi there,
I think i'm actually alergic to the idea of Catering Halls, we're huge foodies with friends in the industry so we had a hard time.
We wound up chosing The Old Field Club in E.Setauket, it felt totally differnent from other places we looked at.
Three Village Inn (a lessings place) also didn't feel like a typical catering hall.
There's also a barn out in Hallockville, we didn't see it becasue it was too small for us, but you can check that out here: http://www.hallockville.com/
good luck finding a locatino was the hardest part for us.

Re: Anything other than a catering hall??
My brother was just married yesterday at the Pridwin Hotel on Shelter Island. It's very charming, and as un-catering hall as you can possibly get! His was a relatively small wedding, 60+ people so we chose to set up the tables for dinner outside on the huge porches they have that overlook the water. There is a separate outdoor area for the bar, and enough room for a small band ( we used Soul Revival, and they were very good).
What else was great is that they had a separate game room, with a pool table and ping-pong table, so the 6 children that attended, ages 3 - 10 hung out and played games if they got a little bored.
They are only open 2 months a year, July and August, and book up very quickly. It worked for us because we had so many out-of-towners, and they were all able to stay at the rooms right on site.

Re: Anything other than a catering hall??
These are more affordable options Deseversky, Old Field Club, Pridwin (shelter island), Manhasset Preserve (really off the beaten path), Nassau Musuem, Harrison House (more expensive for evening wedding).
Good luck!

Re: Anything other than a catering hall??
I would definitely look into the vineyards out east. I know that you can check out the Vineyard Caterers, they're a Lessing. Also, I know Pindar holds weddings and I'm sure it's absolutely gorgeous. Or Atlantis Marine World. I think that's totally fun and different. The complete opposite of any catering hall out there.
Good luck... the 'one' will come around.

Re: Anything other than a catering hall??
Have you looked into the Vanderbilt Mansion? They do outside tented events. In response to an earlier post, a friend of mine had a dinner to go to at the Atlantis Marine aquarium and she said it was really nice and different. I felt the same way when we went looking either it was the same thing or way to expensive. I went with the Melville Marriot only because I have a lot of familycoming from out of town and I liked the way they do the cocktail hour. They have a huge glass atrium as you walk in, and the enterance to it is covered in an arch of 2 columns topped with flowers that go across.
