Original post by amy&anthony
I mean NO $$ help from anyone for anything including engagement party, rehearsal dinner, anything.....
Noone has offered ANYTHING.. I mean we went into it almost expecting that... but noone, nothing... The reason Im so upset is.. FH and I wanted to go away and get married (we said we would pay for immediate family) They all FREAKED and wanted us to have a real big wedding.. so were going to... but now none of those people have offered to help us out at all...

No one is paying for our wedding but the two of us. My siblings have paid for half of my dres and I for the other half......other than that nothing. My parents passed away a few years ago and my FH's parents live in Europe and weddings there are not that similar to thise here......but my Uncle and his parets have offered to give us $$ if needed but so far we do not need any.....hopefully we can do it on our own.

Amy, you have to do what feels right for the both of you. When I got engaged. I first wanted to go away and get married on a small island - then one day I just changed my mind and realized I wanted to get married in my hometown and want to have a wedding I can always remember as I wanted it......you have to do what you want...yes the money can always be used for ten million different things, but that is not what where the focus should be.......it sould be on your wedding and the setting you want for your wedding.....Good luck with your final decision.

Me and FH are doing it all on our own. It'll be worth it, though! (it better be!)

Unfortunately our parents are unable to give us any money towards our weddding, and we did not have an E party......so its all up to us, and we save our little butts off! We're totally ok with it though.
My mom is paying for my dress though, and my shower....which I am very thankful for.

My FH knows I can't contribute a dime to our wedding and he's ok with it. However, my aunt asked me if I was going to have a big wedding and I was appalled that she would ask me that question knowing I'm basically broke Some people just don't give a dayum.

I know how you feel and it *****. I wanted to keep it very small but my mom insists of inviting lots of people that I didn't plan on it. They say they don't have the money to help, but who knows.....

I would tell htem if they want you to have a big wedding then they have to kick in. If not that have the destnation wedding of your dreams without the guilt.

I would tell them if they want you to have a big wedding then they have to kick in. If not then have the destination wedding of your dreams without the guilt. IT'S NOT THIER WEDDING IT'S YOURS!!! And you shouldn't have to break the bank because others think it's best. You don't have to be standoffish about it. Just say to have a big wedding here is very expensive and we don't know if we can do it on our own, and see what they do. It would be different if it was your choice to have it here and you had to pay for it on your own, that would be understandable, but it's not. This is YOUR day and it should be what you want. And if your family wants it to be here than they need to help pay for it. That's just my opinion. But I had a similar problem. My Fiancee parents wanted us to have the wedding on a Saturday and to invite 250 pp. Now they are giving us a little $5000 (it's sad that in wedding speak that amount of money is small) but it kinda is that's enough for flowers and photography. So I straight out told them that our wedding will be on Friday ( there is a $4800 difference between Fri & sat) and we are only having 120 pp. They have to deal with it , it's not our parents wedding it's ours. I think you should do what makes you happy. And if they want it here it's only right that they help out. Andrea

Wow - this sounds familiar. We wanted to go off to Mexico (Royal Hideaway) and get married. We were still inviting everyone to tag along (at their own expense) but lots of family members complained about the price and distance.
SAME HERE. Started off as a destination wedding now were doing it here and it is costly.
But it will be all worth it in the end.
You can save by not getting crazy on the photography, video, and going to Flea markets or (Jamaica Ave.) for your accessories

we're doing the entire thing by ourselves including the RD but part of that has to do with my dad passing and mom having to get her self together which i am completely fine with. i'd rather she was financially stable then helping to pay for my wedding

yes!
That is why no engagement party, no rehersal dinner - can't afford that. So, just the wedding.

We're also doing everything 110% on our own. One of my favorite advantages of it is when someone puts in their '2 cents' about the way we're doing things...I think...are you paying for it...well then hush up!!!
I agree with you 200%!!! We are paying for this all on our own. Neither set of parents have offered to help. So my thought is (especially where my dad is concerned!), I don't want to hear any complaints. It's my wedding and I don't owe anyone anything. I don't want someone holding over my head how much $$ they gave us. I don't mind, though, because I am doing it how I want to.

We're on our own too. FH's parent helped us get great deals from vendors in their neighborhood. With their help we were able to book our hall, caterer, musicians, get invites etc. , all without a deposit. The rest is comming out of our pocket or gets charged. My mom cant offer any financial help either.
The thing i like about doing it ourself, is that noone yet told us how to do things.

Yup, paying for the whole thing ourselves. It is hard, but we do not want to sacrifice our choices in order to get help (not that help has been offered anyway).

We thought we were, but then FHs parents told us that they would pay for the photographer. It is a big help and we totally appreciate it. The rest is up to us.
