Are bridesmaids 'required' to stay until the end?

Original post by pa56

I am a bridesmaid for a Sunday wedding coming up in a few weeks. I work and live in NYC but the wedding is in NJ. The last bus back to NYC is at 11pm but I won't make it to the bus stop unless I leave the reception at least 1 hour early.

As a bridesmaid, am I 'required' to stay until the very end?

I can stay in NJ overnight and take a bus in the morning, but I would prefer not to spend extra money on a hotel room. Being a bridesmaid is not cheap!

Any suggestions on how to handle this?

I think you should talk to your friend and see if you can work out some other sort of arrangement. If not, then explain to her that you really don't have any other choice but to leave early. You said that you took two days off of work to help her, so I am sure that she is already more than appreciative.

I want to very respectfully disagree with the other 2 posters. But I also am a very laid back bride who requires nothing from my girls except be my friend and have a good time.

IMHO you should tell the bride your situation. It still remains that if you dont get the last bus you will be really stuck in a bad position. I cant believe that your bride would be so bent out of shape.

But again, talk to her. She might be angry but you still have no choice. See if you can get a ride/share a ride something.

Its early enough that if she WANTS you to stay she can help you figure this out.

Again, I say this with a great deal of respect to the other posters!

ITA!!!! I wouldn't have any issues if a BM left an hr early. I would like to know in advance just to know what to expect and that she didn't 'ditch' the wedding for a random reason!

I guess for me - i would take the next day off for the wedding , stay over at the hotel, so I would hope one of my bm would do that for me as well

i guess it just depends on how she feels, but i would let her know

I would stay until the end...try to room with another person and split the cost. That is what I did once. It is a lot of money to be in someone's wedding, but you don't really want to cheat yourself or them by leaving early.

well not even about her minding but are you sure that at 11pm you want to wait for the bus. Not sure what part of NJ this will be in but ive seen some of the bus stops in NJ late at night and many are VERY isolated, very dark and nothing else around. You will be very dressed and you might want to consider whether you want to do this or not. Is your DH going with you? sorry he probably is but nothing was mentioned of him but in case he is not going, can he pick you up? How far away is it from like Hoboken, or jersey city? maybe if its not far you can take a cab to the PATH and take the PATH into the city, at night there are alot more ppl on the PATH.

Also, how far away is the bus stop from the RH, how will you get there?

to answer your question. Some brides will get mad and some others won't, you know her best so im sure you know how she will really feel about this.

all good points!!

imo, i would be upset if someone from the BP had to leave early. you expect it of guests, but not of ppl that agreed to be with you for the night. but thats just my opinion.

i know you said that the other BMs were from NJ. can you just crash at one of their houses?

I completely agree! I am honored my BMs are putting so much effort into my wedding in the first place! Being a bridesmaid takes a lot of time and money. If one of them had to leave early..then they have to leave early! If anything, I think the bride may be disappointed you have to leave early, but lots of people start to leave an hour early anyways!!

I would be disappointed, but not angry. especially if she told me ahead of time.

This question took some thought....if I were having a Sunday night wedding I would make sure the bridal party would be able to stay. I would discuss with them before hand about their arrangements for the night. I wouldnt want my friend standing at a bus stop by herself so late at night. I think maybe if you speak to her and tell her your situation together you guys may be able to come up with a better safer plan.
