Are Favors Mandatory

Original post by leeserd

I've been looking around for wedding favors and this stuff is such junk! It's not the money, I don't mind spending some to buy our guests favors but I do mind wasting money on junk that I know will just be thrown out the minute they hit the door. Even the more expensive favors are junky looking and I know that I would not want it. All of the 'practical' favors like cheese graters and measuring spoons people already have for the most part. I guess that I could do donation favors, but are favors required at all?

If you think that favors are absolutely necessary, what do you suggest?

IMO I dont think they're necessary. I dont expect one at a wedding and I really dont have room for the little tchochkes (sp.).
we are doing a donation and giving out a piece of chocolate on the way out.

I was just reading some other posts -- why do we need to give a favor to thank guests for coming? Didn't we just feed them, give them an open bar, let them witness a very romantic and special and private event, and then give them a great party? We walked around the room and spoke to every single person and thanked them personally for coming. Would it have made it any more meaningful than that to give them a keychain or a cupcake?

ITA. They should be thanking us for letting them be a part of something so wonderful!

What about a nice wine bottle stopper? they have cute ones that are like 2 or 3 bucks that are metal and dont look cheap at all.

I think most favors are a waste. Unless its edible it is usually a piece of junk. LOL sorry. I feel like most people end up throwing them away anyway. I have gone to weddings with no favors and never thought anything of it.

I went to a wedding recently and there were no favors. Not even a donation, nothing. I was kind of surprised. Not that I need a favor, like you said most of them are junk, but I was a little surprised that the couple didn't think to do ANYTHING to thank the guests for coming.

See when i havn't gotten a favor at a wedding, I didn't see it as them not thanking us for coming. LOL. I figured thats why they served us dinner and drinks.

IMO favors are such a waste of money - unless you do a donation.

I did a small box of chocolate covered espresso beans bc DH and I love them. With that being said, no one else really liked them and I even heard some complaints.

IMO you are not obligated to give a favor but it is a nice gesture.

I've been to several weddings and I have NEVER kept a single favor from any of them for more than a day or two.

i think it is necessary.. in some way. But you dont have to do a traditional favor. You can get a candy bar and have ppl take some of it home, edible favors are always fun!!!.. You can make a CD, do a donation, maybe do wine favors? those will def. go to use!! There are alot of options you can do without wasting money.

Favors are not mandatory..but most people do expect them...

If you want to be simple & practical with not much fuss.. you can do place card holders that double as favors.. there are a TON of them out there and if you have a them im sure you could find one to go along with it.. I've gotten a few of them and use them on my desk at work to hold a picture...

I agree 100%. Instead of a favor we did a donation to the American Cancer Society. This was the best thing we did b/c so many people thanks us for it and said they would rather a donation be made instead of us buying crap for them. How about a donation or even candy?

i would do a donation.

We did not give out favors and no one missed them. Not one person commented on the fact that they didn't get a favor. We felt that by no having favors, we could splurge on another area of our wedding like photography or the DJ - which in our opinion was more important.

I would do a candy favor at least. A truffle, cupcake, something like that would be nice.

I think they're fine but I don't go to weddings being like, OOOOHHH I can't wait to get my favor. I can't remember every favor I've ever gotten. We are doing a donation and giving a custom food favor; either petit fours, a cookie, a brownie or a cupcake.

I don't think it's a necessity. Not everybody does them anyway. When I was planning my wedding last year, I felt the same as you - all of the favors I saw were just junk and way overdone. I had a few people telling me not to bother with them at all if I don't think it's worth the money. I did end up finding something fun & unique tho. But if I hadn't, I probably wouldn't have bothered.

Honestly, most favors I get at weddings end up lost or thrown away within a few months anyway.

I think they are expected ... I would be confused if I didn't receive one, even though you are right in that most times people just chuck them on their way out the door. FH and I are doing fancy truffle favors because everyone likes chocolate and I can't see many people throwing them out. I don't see the need to go overboard on them, but I do kinda feel like you should have them.

I agree with the whole junk favors, I had the same issue when I had to do the favors for my wedding. I put truffles in a picnic basket for our guests. It was a huge hit! No one can resist sweets, particularly chocolates & candy! You can also do a candy bar where your guests can scoop from various selection of candies/chocolates. They can pick their own candy from jars and build their own candy bag. It's a big trend right now.

I def think you should do something like a donation or even a candy for your guests. It is a little gesture but it is something that is expected.

I think favors are traditional, ppl expect them bc they get them at every wedding (at least I know I did). I would suggest a unique favor, instead of the most common ones. I rarely use the favors I get, but I can't lie...I enjoy unwrapping it....feels like a small gift even thought most of the time it's not junk....I just like the surprise of what's in the box...lol

I think a favor is expected. I'm doing champagne. I know my guest will drink that. Then they can throw the bottle away

IMHO you are paying a lot of money for people to come.

I just dont think its neccesary.

And those people are also (for the most part) trying to pay you back by giving you at least $$ to cover their plates... its still a gift and there should be a thank you attached in the form of some type of favor.... even a donation... but to give nothing will prob look bad
