I've been looking around for wedding favors and this stuff is such junk! It's not the money, I don't mind spending some to buy our guests favors but I do mind wasting money on junk that I know will just be thrown out the minute they hit the door. Even the more expensive favors are junky looking and I know that I would not want it. All of the 'practical' favors like cheese graters and measuring spoons people already have for the most part. I guess that I could do donation favors, but are favors required at all?
If you think that favors are absolutely necessary, what do you suggest?

Re: Are Favors Mandatory
Defintely a waste in my opinion. It's almost always something junky that the drunk/sleepy guests leave behind. I'm not doing favors and I've been to several weddings without favors. I know that lots of people do them but to me they're wasteful and can even be a bit cheesy at times.

We're doing a donation instead of favors -- I think people will appreciate that a lot more than the junk we usually get at weddings.

i feel the same way... i am only doing 5 jordan almonds in the tool wrapping with the cute little poem, and thats it! I would be absolutely pi$$ed if i spent the money on something that you left on the table cause you didn't want it, or if I found it in the garbage on the way out the door!!!

I think getting favors would be nice but of course not needed. It's your wedding after all! You could try searching for practical favors. I was thinking the same thing - that my guests are going to be throwing away the favors so fast cause most are not necessary. But I found this idea for heart shaped cookie cutters. Our guests could reuse them at anytime and they were $1 per favor (each is a set of 3 cookie cutters of different sizes). And who doesn't like making cookies!

I've been to weddings where I've gotten junky stuff (tossed it!), gourmet chocolate (ate it!), where the bride and groom made a donation (loved it!), and where we didn't get a favor (cool with me!)
FH and I are very much in tune with environmental factors. We're trying to be as waste-less as possible in this wedding planning. We're also having a fully vegetarian wedding, which most of our family is aware of (we're long-term veggies for animal rights reason) and most support. We're probably going to do one of three things (or a combo of two, if $$$ permits):
- A donation to an environmental cause - Give out fair trade chocolate and/or coffee - Give out reusable grocery bags (someone else mentioned they're doing this in this thread - that's awesome!)
Thing is, a wedding is a personal experience...while we're going through the motions of a typical wedding plan, we're limiting the amount of cut flowers, using recycled materials for our invites and perhaps not even bothering with programs. We may even pull a Leo DiCaprio and arrive in a Prius! But that's us. We know that whatever we choose to do in terms of favors will be something people are generally cool with (and if they're not, well...SFW, that's their issue) and knowing us, they expect something like that.

Have you considered a donation in lieu of favors? Are there any special causes that you believe in? If not, maybe something like chocolate or anything else edible. People love to eat!!!!!

I'm getting married during winter, so I'm going to give out little winter decorations. For the people who like to decorate, they will acquire a new decoration. For the people who do not like to decorate...they have no winter spirit!!!!
I know a couple who painted cards. I thought it was a great idea. They were decorated on the outside and blank on the inside so they could be used for so many different occasions! And...each guest got a personalized and different favor!
