I've been looking around for wedding favors and this stuff is such junk! It's not the money, I don't mind spending some to buy our guests favors but I do mind wasting money on junk that I know will just be thrown out the minute they hit the door. Even the more expensive favors are junky looking and I know that I would not want it. All of the 'practical' favors like cheese graters and measuring spoons people already have for the most part. I guess that I could do donation favors, but are favors required at all?
If you think that favors are absolutely necessary, what do you suggest?

Re: Are Favors Mandatory
I think they are expected ... I would be confused if I didn't receive one, even though you are right in that most times people just chuck them on their way out the door. FH and I are doing fancy truffle favors because everyone likes chocolate and I can't see many people throwing them out. I don't see the need to go overboard on them, but I do kinda feel like you should have them.

People do expect them. I think edible favors are great because they arent junky at all and usually wont go to waste. Maybe cupcakes?

Re: Are Favors Mandatory
Personally, I don't expect favors. I would be happy to not receive a favor from a wedding! I don't go to a wedding looking forward to receiving my 100th set of LOVE coasters or my 78th candle (no offense to people who give these out...) If you feel weird not doing a favor, you can always do some sort of candy.. at least the majority of people will actually eat it and not throw it out. But IMO I don't think it's necessary!

GRRRR. Just lost my post.
ANYWAY, do what you want. If you wnat them great, if you dont want them dont get them.
We are NOT having favors and happy to not have any. I agree that some of them are junky and I do throw them away when I get home.

Re: Are Favors Mandatory
I believe that you should only do a favor if it means something to you and it would give you pleasure to give something out.
Don't do a favor just because you think other people expect one, especially if it ends up being something that means nothing to you and you feel embarrassed about giving! That's just silly!
The day they spend with you will be remembered for the fun your guests have and the joy they share watching you and FH marry.
You still have a bit of time, so keep considering things that you really like and think about whether you'd like to have all of your guests enjoy them as well. I went with personalized reusable grocery bags (against my dad's wishes) because it's something I'm seriously passionate about and I am so excited about the idea of giving everyone a reusable grocery bag. It makes me smile even repeating it now lol.
If you don't have any items that are practical that make you feel giddy and cheerful about giving out, don't feel obligated to do any favor 'just because.'
Good luck with your decision!

I'd say do something edible or little wine bottles if you don't want to do an object you think people may throw out... people always like stuff they can eat or drink

Re: Are Favors Mandatory
Favors certainly aren't necessary, and I wouldn't be disappointed if I didn't get one.
But if you are looking for something unique and not junky, here are few suggestions:
- Lucky bamboo plant. Chinatown has them for cheap and you can buy small glass bud vases at Ikea for very cheap. - Keychain. That's what we did. - Mint tins. Everyone wants fresh breath!
i was at a wedding recently and they didnt have any type of favor....not even a donation or nething. I didn't really think about it till the next day like hey they didnt do nething...i kinda found it strange but i guess its not a huge deal.

I think people generally expect favors. Why not do something edible or a donation to somewhere?

Re: Are Favors Mandatory
I definitely do not find favors to be necessary, and I would never expect one. Attending a wedding is b/c I love the people, support the marriage, and want to be able to celebrate the special day with them. I don't need to be 'rewarded' for coming - it's my honor. Plus, I live in a small apartment - I don't need more 'stuff' to clutter it up.
In all the weddings I've been to, the only favor I've ever received was a bottle of wine, which I appreciated. I'd must rather the couple save their money than buy a little something that most guests will probably throw away anyway.
Here's another idea - I'm not doing a favor, but I'm having my RH break down my CPs into little 'bouquets' so as people leave they can take a few pretty flowers home with them.

Re: Are Favors Mandatory
FYI -- Jewish weddings do not do favors. so are they necessary absolutly not, it depends what your crowd is looking for.
I am having an interfaith wedding, we are doing a donation so that his side will not feel there was no favor.

Re: Are Favors Mandatory
I don't think they are mantatory. I have only been to one wedding where there were favors. We didn't give favors at our wedding and no one seemed to care. And if they judged my entire wedding based on whether they received a favor at the end, then it was my fault for inviting them in the first place...
If you feel like you must have a favor, do something food related. Everyone loves that stuff.

Re: Are Favors Mandatory
I was just reading some other posts -- why do we need to give a favor to thank guests for coming? Didn't we just feed them, give them an open bar, let them witness a very romantic and special and private event, and then give them a great party? We walked around the room and spoke to every single person and thanked them personally for coming. Would it have made it any more meaningful than that to give them a keychain or a cupcake?
