ok so... dhs best friend is getting engaged soon- the ring is on order. when he and his GF went to pick it out, they were choosing between a 3/4 carrot and a 1 carrot center stone. she liked the 3/4 better ( its all about whats more comfortable on your hand). so, he works in the finance department of a big company, and his boss is a woman and there are lots of women in his office... he told them about it, and they all said ' get her the bigger one! what are you gonna do when you move up in the company and go to a business function and your wife has a TINY diamond??' like should that even matter?? if shes more comfortable in the smaller one... shes the one that has to wear it for the rest of her life! fnny thing is, he listened to them and ordered it with the bigger diamond... we'll see what happens

That's just ridiculous.
I go to parties with partners at my law firm all the time -- I've yet to meet one wife with a giant diamond on her finger... And these are people who make like $8 million a year...
It's not the size of the stone that matters, it's what she likes and most importantly the sentiment of the ring. Some people just have too much to say! Trust me, at important business functions (and I go to many), NO ONE is talking about the size of the diamond on the hand of someone's wife... maybe if you just got engaged, people would tell you your ring is nice, but otherwise... no one is really looking.

he could be getting a 3/4 stone that is perfectly clear and flawless, and on the other hand, that 1 stone could have a lot of flaws in it...therefore making the 3/4 better-and worth more....

this is why i never went ring shopping with my FH. I told him styles I liked (hinted throughout the years lol) but he picked it out all by himself

i don't think its about him spending the money... she just wants the smaller stone. when they first went looking i remember her saying ' i thought i wanted 1 carrot, but 3/4 looks much better on my hand' and she is always talking about our other friends ring that is waaay too big and is always spinning on her finger and how she doesnt' want one thats like that.... i don't think she'll be upset, but shes VERY opinionated, so we'll see what happens

LOL i'll keep ya posted! i doubt she'll be too upset, but she can be very opinionated and i don't think she'd be shy about telling him if she didn't like it or something... LOL so, we'll see what happens

That's exactly what happened to Kevin Costners wife when they got engaged! Joan Rivers made fun of her tiny diamond and she just shrugged it off and said how much she loved him and it didn't matter!! He should have gotten her the one she wanted! The only thing that matters is that he WANTS her..not that he has the money to buy her a big ring

Yes people are that snobby. My FH is a straight up, blue-collar worker. I'm an attorney. When we were looking at rings, HIS attitude, not mine, was that I had to have a nice ring b/c I was going to be around what he termed 'important' people. I don't know if it was his insecurity or what, but he just kept saying that the type of field I am in, appearance is everything, and he wanted me to have a really nice ring. So he worked a lot of overtime so he could buy me that. Was that me? No. I didn't care what I got. But in your friend's case, yes, I can totally see that happening. Is it right? NO.
Yes Snobby, those women are what make women be called horrible names which I shall not state.
I have a small ring, my parents made fun of it when we showed it to them after our engagement. My mother said always 1 carot and nothing less. Well I got less but it is a nicer stone and setting and in white gold which I wanted. My fh was upset a bit and understandably and I informed my parents I picked it out and I liked it so f-off or shut up about it. They stood there shocked and then appologized saying they only ment it to lighten up the situation. I love my parents to death and I know they mean well but I know they need to be put in their place. That is the case of those women. He should of put them in their place.
People will always say things even if its not ment to be hurtful. Ignore it and get what you want.

People can absolutely be this snobby, no matter what industry they work in. I think it's just in New York, though. Nowhere else in this country do people feel like they have to get 1-2 carat rings.

Short answer, yes. Get what she wants. For me I turned down a bigger more expensive ring because there was no way I wanted Fh to pay that much for a ring, when we both had a wedding to pay for. I get tons of complements and in the end we chose a smaller, but perfect color and clarity instead of a larger, but not so good color or clarity. She should get what she wants.

its definitely NOT just NY.
and if someone does have a 2 carat ring - does that mean that its a poor color/clarity or that they HAD to have it. its just a piece of jewelery- what it represents is more important!
