I was wondering if everyone is banking their baby's cord blood or not?
Thanks, Denise

We will not be doing banking our baby's cord blood. I f you do consider it, many people I know have used Via cord...
We did look into it...2 things you should know. it is vey expensive and they only hold it until the child is 18 years old....
To us, it wasn't worth the money.

Re: Are you banking your baby's cord blood?
We decided to bank our daughter's cord blood...I was the one who said no but my DH talked me into it. They way he worded it is that we really don't have the initial money but yearly it is only $95 a year and God for bid she needed it the cost would be priceless. It may not be for everyone and I think it is a personal decision and their is not right or wrong choice.

We did bank our baby's cord blood with viacord. I didnt care how expensive it was, it gives me peace of mind knowing that its there and one day God forbid having to use it.

My aunt is in genetic research and we discussed it at length with her and decided against it.

Not true, when your child turns 18 they give you the choice to give them ownership (your child), or to continue banking it in your name. I stronly recommend it, my family works very closely with head of pediatric oncology at both Stony Brook and North Shore and both docs said it is imperative (they have saved kid's lives because of their own, or their sibling's cord blood cells) and Viacord is the mpst recommended, their viable cell #s are highest and they are used most by Make a Wish, Cancer Care, and many other oncology/hemonc units. Also, ask about payment plans, most of the companies will work with you to make it affordable. I am lucky to get a professional's discount but I know they cane make it work for you. I personally know a few kids whose lives were saved because of cord cell banking.

As of right now, we're not going to...but, I haven't read all that much about it and have no idea what the costs are like...so, I guess we could eventually change our minds.

Well, we decided to definitely do it. We just can't decide between Viacord and Cyro-Cell. Viacord is obviously most recommended but much more expensive.
However, my Dr. told me they get reimbursed for recommending them So that makes me wonder now???
So what do I do?? What company do I go with??

Re: Are you banking your baby's cord blood?
I used Viacrod because of their success rates as well as the fact that they are certified and lcensed, they pass with flying colors from all the medical review boards and came as the most highly recommended from head of pediatric oncology from 2 reputable research hospitals. I don't think cryocell is certified or licensed, their applications are pending (or that was last that I heard in one of my tumor board meetings at work)

They don't get reimbursed, they get credits, it does not equal a financial reimbursement. Most companies offer the offices this. Good luck making a decision.

Oh boy, then forget it.
The price difference was between $300-500..
I am going to call and ask them if they are licensed and insured....
