Are you changing your name?

Original post by mandag

Hey Ladies,

FH really wants me to take his last name, but I really love mine! What are you all doing? Changing? Hyphenating? Keeping? I'd love to know!

I'm adding a poll, too!

Re: Are you changing your name?

I must have said this a million times as I was planning my wedding. I am changing my name without hesitation. I am forever my parents' child and nothing will ever change that, not even a new last name. I am just as much of a legacy to my father as my brother is even if my name is not the same. My father, may he rest in peace, would have thought it strange if I did not take DH's name. He would have asked 'What do you mean you aren't changing your name?' As someone who married later in life, you would think I would be more attached to my maiden name - I am not. Believe me, my married name is a phonetic nightmare that people butcher on a daily basis, but I took it proudly.

I did not and will not change my name. I no longer get upset when people call me Mrs. H*** but I will always be Ms. L****. Dh knew this from the beginning so there really was nothing he could say about it. Only my mother and sister had a problem and quite frankly I don't give a sh!t what they think . The kids will be hyphenated and the hyphenated name will be shorter then the last names of my Italian friends.

I wouldn't call myself a traditionalist but as some girls said, I always imagined changing my name when I got married.

This will be my third name change My step-father (whom i consider my father) adopted my sister and I when we were young.

I'm going to start the process but won't actually be changing anything until after we go on our honeymoon which won't be for 2 months after the wedding. I need to keep everything since my passport has my last name and I could have some problems if I change over too soon.

Re: Are you changing your name?

I'm probably going to change my name because it's long, Slavic, hard to spell and pronounce and it upsets me when people butcher it.

I feel pretty weird about taking his name though. I'm not sure why.

But... since my first name starts with I and his last name starts with P, I may take his name and add in a middle name that starts with M so my initials would spell IMP.

See - we're the opposite. Mine is very Italian and means a lot to me, and his is completely simple and plain. Hmmmm.

Same here but I am changing mine. To me, it is an honor to take his last name

I think I'm going to use both last names, not hyphenated.

I will be hyphenating my last name and his. I really didn't want to give up my last name, but he really wanted me to take his, so this was my way of compromising.

I cant wait until my last name is gone...i dont even know my real father and he had nerve to not allow my mother to change my name when she married my stepfather...ugh cant wait...

I hyphenated my name- For me, that was the best decision- socially most people refer to me as Dhs last name-which is fine, but I didn't want to give up my last name altogether
