Are you expected to tip the....

Photographer?????

I never heard of this before and I was browsing the newlywed boards and they were talking about how much they tipped their photographer.

This is my second wedding and for my first wedding, I did not tip my photographer. It was a husband and wife team that worked out of their home. I paid them for their services ($2700) and then I paid for my album ($1000). Why was there a need for a $100 tip?

I guess I could understand if it's a large outfit with tons of photographers, so you might want to tip the photographer they send to your wedding, but what about when it's a one man show that runs a private business from home. Is it necessary to tip?

I tipped my photographer $100 and I tipped his assistant $50.

I gave the tip to the photographer and assistant together...so if he is a good boss/owner he would have given her the entire $100..

my sister made a good point...if you tip one person...why should you leave another person out...it is true that you haven't seen the work yet, but was he pleasant? did he stay out of the way...

LI Weddings tend to overtip...and I did as well...but I was so happy at the end of the day that I was more than happy to tip everyone(although thinking about tipping before the wedding...I was bitter)

I tipped the same amount as Kelly.

I will definitely wait to see the proofs before I tip any of the photographers. If everything comes out right, then by all means I will tip the photographer as well as his assistant, as long as he isn't the owner.
My aunt just told me of a wedding many years ago where something happened to all the posed photos of the groom's family. The bride's Mom and Dad didn't sleep for nights trying to figure out how to tell their daughter, their new son-in-law, and their new in-laws. The photos were definitely taken but rather than admit what happened to them, the photographer claimed they were never told to take them.

i use to think the same way, why tip the person before I see what they do for my day, then I went for my engagement photos and got to work with my photographer and i feel confident that he will do a good job, so he is definaely getting tipped that day..
