so my friend just had his wedding this past friday, and he said he spent about $45k. he told me he only got about $10k in gifts. he had 135 guests. is this possible?!?!?
sorry if i seem shallow but FH and i are paying for this whole wedding ourselves and that would stink if that's all we got

Re: are you kidding?!
From what other married couples that our friends have told me they have gotten half what they paid back in gifts.
Don't feel like your feeling shallow, we're paying for our wedding too and we're not getting married for the gifts either but it's a nice ending.

hey jess.....is your friend my husband?? lol
Yes, very true. Those are almost my exact numbers for my wedding. Sad, but so true. So scary how those are almost exactly the same number for my wedding...

Re: are you kidding?!
I guess I just look at it different................
It doesn't matter to me in the least how many gifts we get or even how much was spent on them.
I'm just honored that people are taking time out of their hectic life and will be spending money to travel to watch my FH and I get married. That to me is seriously a gift enough........
But I am well aware that people look at this differently too

Re: are you kidding?!
Nope not kidding, but you don't have a wedding for the gifts. You have it because you love each other and you are celebrating you new life together. If you want to spend 45k on the wedding that's your call. It's all in our hands on how much we spend on our wedding. You can have a fabulous wedding for less than that. I've been to some of them

Re: are you kidding?!
That is crazy, but I can see it happening. It is not likely that people even cover their plate anymore and if they do, then the RH is covered, but they do not take into affect all the other aspects of the Wedding (DJ, Florist, etc...) nor should they though.
It is what it is

haha, it is true though, you are not going to get the same amount in gifts back, you have to have the wedding to have a great wedding, not for the gifts. With the cost of a wedding nowadays, it would be impossible for guests to cover what it really costs in thier gifts.

Re: are you kidding?!
As soon as we booked the RH I told FH we were going to spend more money than we'll make on our wedding.....it's fine with us because we're having the wedding we want ! ! But most people won't even cover their plates....we'll take whatever we get & be happy !

Re: are you kidding?!
It's a sad fact, but true.
When we sat down to plan, we knew full well that there is no way we're getting back what we will be spending. We are hoping for a fraction of it back, but that wasn't our concern. We want to have a wedding that everyone will enjoy.
Oh how I wish I will get the money back though

Re: are you kidding?!
I know what I will be getting since his sisters both just got married and I know what his family will give. One family friend gave $50 for two people. So I will be happy if we get $10,000 from 135 people!

Re: are you kidding?!
That is definitely a reality check
When FH and I go to a wedding we always try to cover our plates, plus a little more..
I don't think you were being shallow at all...just realistic!!

You will never make back what you put out. I've have been told this from the very beginning. Every married couple tells me to alope to save the money and to buy a house.

wow, really......A little shocked here, we are also paying for our own wedding its not about the money for us, as you girls also stated, but hey that seems a little crazy......but I guess, it is what it is, all we can say is we did have or will have the best day of our life,,,,,,,,yeah... as for the money at least its something right....

Wow, that is excellent and what I am hoping for...My parents were always generous as FH and I are always generous - when we go to weddings and when we are in them....So I am hoping for the best.

Exactly!!! Even if everyone 'covered their plate', that would only pay for the reception hall cost. The entire wedding usually is double (in our case, more than double) the RH cost. I've only heard of one person that I know who got married and got back what she spent. Everyone else says less, considerably less.
I know one person who got $7000 in gifts and had 150 guests. My FH and my families are not well off at all, and they make up the majority of our guests, so I don't think we'll be getting very much in gifts at the wedding, but that is fine with us because we're planning the wedding that we want, not to make money back, but to celebrate with everyone that we love. We are paying for it ourselves so of course we'd love to get as much in gifts as possible, but we don't expect it.

Re: are you kidding?!
I am trying not to think about this. The thought makes my stomach hurt. lol We had our engagement party last month with 75 people and made over $3,000. That party was mostly family and just close friends. So, I am hoping that we will be okay. I guess we will see in December...
