Are you kidding me???

Original post by coldasice217

So my BM tells me today (the one who I had the reservations about asking) that she saw a great wedding gift for me and FH in a magazine but she wasn't sure if we would like it.

So me, being me, said you saw a picture of cash in a magazine? Cool.

She then proceeds to tell me that it's a set of 12 Christmas ornaments, of animals, that each have a symbolism for newlyweds.

ORNAMENTS????

Was I totally out of line to tell her that that's a house warming gift, not a wedding present???

Guess who's not being invited with a guest anymore!

I hear exaclty what you are saying sounds like this girl is just a pain in the hiney when it comes to that stuff ... we all have friends like that , vent away i am sure you love her which s why you asked her in the first place.. just try to laugh her off and you crack me up

oh we DEF all have friends like that.... its like the black sheep of the group... heck I had FH's friends gf tell me straight to my face 'i hate all engaged girls, all they do is talk about their weddings; i never wanna be in a bp ever again' LoL Of course after that, I couldnt even consider putting her in the bp

I hate this too. I understand some people dont care about weddings but why tell engaged or married girls this lol. Sometimes you keep your opinions to yourself. I see it done in other situations too, like so many say 'ugh i hate when i am invited to a friends e-party' i understand you might not like the idea of it but in the end it is still your friend and shouldn't tell them that you hate attending these. HOnestly, if someone had said that to me then i wouldnt even want them there. If they see my party as such a big incovenience for them and cant put their feelings aside and just be happy for their friend then stay home and be selfish. Guess what, I have had to attend alot of parties that I might not particular like but at the same time when it was for a friend i was just real happy for my friend and just wanted to celebrate with them and thats it.

I couldnt have said it any better... my friend who i dont see as often as this girl asked me why i didnt put that girl in the bp instead... why? so she can cause grief and battle me on fittings, gifts, etc etc ... I think not LOL I would have been a fool to aks her to be in it, which is why i made my considerations carefully.... I did have a reservation about 1 girl but i spoke to her about it before i asked her to be a part of it... But bottom line, theres always someone in our life that tends to act in a way that we dont care for, but is shes a real friend, you'll work through it all

seriously, some people make it all about them. Get over it and just be happy for somebody. ANd to make comments such as 'i hate engaged girls' only shows jealousy to me. I bet any girl that says such a comment, are the worse ones when its their turn

I didnt wanna say it, but its safe to say shes a bit jealous... shes with someone who shows no sign of committment like that and she knows it, but she hangs around hoping he'll change... i really feel sorry for her situation but she can only blame herself for staying in a rel that doesnt meet her own needs too

its sad if she is going through that. But at the same time doesnt mean she cant be happy for others, but some people are only happy for others when they are happy in their own lives. Otherwise they are haters.

I had a friend complain to me about our mututal friend inviting us to her childs 5th birthday party. We've been friends for like ever, and we were in her wedding party... and I was so upset by that. It's like, You dont HAVE to go... its at a gymboree not a castle, and you should be honored she wants you in her childs life!

I know I'm crashing... but just to let you know, I had someone give me a cutting board and dustbuster as a wedding gift. Another couple stiffed. It's an LI thing to expect cash for a wedding. I'd be grateful that this BM was thinking about you and wanted to get you something meaningful to celebrate your wedding. Not all of us were that lucky. JMO.

EXACTLY!!!! how can you complain about going to your friends kids birthday party. I am sure she would've been even more upset if she didn't get invited. Its like you can't win

I actually think that is a great gift! I agree with what most of you have said that its the thought that counts. I dont think it matters how wealthy someone is or how poor someone is...a gift is a gift and shouldnt be looked down upon no matter what it is. It's a touchy subject because a lot of people expect/want money to pay for the wedding. I remember when FBIL got married...he was pissed because he didnt make enough money back. It made me think because weddings are not a money making venture. its a celebration! I just think we shouldn't (myself included!) go into it looking to make money! Just rubs me the wrong way!

JMO I think that is kind of rude. It is the thought that counts. Maybe it is something she had in mind to give at your bridal shower. Aren't your shower gifts consider a wedding gift too. Maybe she also intends to give $$$ on your wedding day also. But this is JMO

ITA... and this is the BM that you felt wasn't really excited for you.... today she thought of a gift for you and you pretty much shot her down. So if she was working on changing her behavior this might have pushed it back to square one.
I think you should cut her a little slack. No matter how small or 'cheesy' the gift is you should always be gracious.
JMO

I agree as well, I've seen those ornaments as shower gifts and that could be what she was getting at, sounds like she was trying to meet you half way and if she's no longer excited about your wedding then she kinda has the right since she was shot down...again, JMO!

WOW..... I can't believe that you responded like that. I agree with the other girls its the thought that counts. It sounds like your very petty and your inviting people for the wrong reasons. And with the way the economy is you should expect a lot less. Sorry but you kinda annoyed me

Honestly... if I was in her shoes I think I would have died if you said that to me. Sorry. I feel really bad for her right now. I know weddings are expensive and the gifts really help but that is not what you base who you invite on. You are having a wedding to celebrate your love for your husband not so you get gifts from your guests. They give gifts out of the kindness of there hearts regardless if they are small and meaningful or money to help you and FH begin your lives. JMO... sorry

2010 bride here:

i have to agree. maybe since your wedding is in december she thought of it as a nice gift for you. after your wedding & honeymoon the first holiday you will celebrate married is christmas.

i was gonna say that too about the christmas theme

LOL... How nice!! I kind of feel the same way of certain ppl invited to my wedding who just come up with silly things, I just want to slap them!!

I rather not receive any gifts!! Just gift cards... I'm afraid I will end up saying the wrong stuff.. lol

LOL!!!! I'm sorry, but I do not agree with some of the posts that you should feel bad with what you said. I would of said it too lol!!!! Bridal shower gift, okay- but wedding?? NO WAY!!! Everyone knows that.... sentimental or not.... she could of given you that at the bridal shower or just a gift before the wedding, but def. not as a wedding gift. As a bride, I would be offended that she gave me that as a gift at my wedding. I'm not a person who is all about money- but cmon.... thats not fair to you either, esp. if you and your FH are paying for the wedding yourselves.

I think it was a nice gesture considering she wasn't involved at all before and since the wedding is in December. I also think that its a nice gift since she will have bridal party expenses i.e. shoes, dress, hair, make up, etc.

But what you said abt cash being in the magazine was pretty funny and since you are friends I'm sure she knows your humor.

JMO.....

Yes, and people tell me you sometimes only make about half of what you put into your wedding.... I'm hoping just for anything- a couple grand would be nice to help out for a down payment on a house

I agree w/u it's not a wedding gift, thats more of like a house warming gift around the holidays, but maybe she thought it would be a cute idea, along w/another gift. but I also see it from your point of view, I would also be thinking 'Is that all?'
