Went for my first fitting yesterday and the bill came to $700....
My dress is totally simple, no lace, no beading, just an empire waist sort of 'goddess gown' from Priscilla of Boston and they charged me 200 bucks just to cut off the 6 inch train! It took her literally 3 minutes to take scissors to it and chop it off while I was standing there in it. Does this seem ridiculous to anyone other than me?!?!
UPDATE! Thanks again to everyone who responded to my post. I just got off the phone with the store and they're doing NOTHING for me. They offered to knock off 10 percent of the cost of cutting off the train, a whole 20 dollars. That's just a wonderful discount off of 705 dollars.... Great. Thanks. So now I have to decide whether to just get screwed here and let them do it or take it elsewhere. I don't know what to do. Suggestions?
I was very happy with my Priscilla of Boston experience up until this point. Now I am p i s s e d and you'd better believe they will NOT get a good review from me when this is all said and done.

Re: Are you kidding me?
I think that seems a little pricey I must say... Im paying $575 at Kleinfelds but that is their flat rate and I can do anyhting to the dress for that price and I thought THAT was insane!

$700 seems VERY high for the type of gown you are describing. If they had to add boning, rearrange beading, etc, I could understand... but to lift straps and hem? I would talk to the manager maybe.
That's what i think I'm going to do, definitely speak to a manager. It's all totally basic stuff that they need to do, and very little of it. it's not like they're even taking in inches on the sides or hemming inches off the bottom. It's all very slight modifications they're making. I'm so angry about the whole thing. It's quite frustrating.

I agree about the alterations cap. Usually you pay a flat fee for alterations and it can't go beyond that no matter what they do to the dress. For example, mine at Saks were $600 and Kleinfeld usually charges $575 and you can go for as many fittings as you need/want. Definitely speak to a manager.

I'm suprised that they are charging you for each thing that they do instead of a flat rate. Even at Kleinfeld's, I paid $575 (which is nuts, I know) but I went in for 5 fittings (at least), she chopped off the ugly train for me, and did a million other things to the dress. It seems like their A La Carte pricing is really unfair.

That's pretty steap! My hemming was $250, but I have a big ball gown with a train and it took her about 15mins just to pin it to the right length so I know the hemming is a pretty in-depth job, but on a dress like yours it shouldn't be that much!

There was no cap on the alterations? Usually they will put a cap on the charges.

I totally agree! I thought it'd be 300 bucks at most becasue my gown is so simple, I was floored when the ticket said 700. I was in a rush to catch the LIRR though so I just paid it and went. Now I'm wishing I had fought it while I was sill there.
This totally s u c k s because I love my gown and now this is just putting a sour taste in my mouth about the whole thing. Know what I mean? I just called them and they're going to go 'pull my file' and call me back. I'll keep you ladies posted. Ugh.

Nope, no cap. But I'll be sure to ask about it when I talk to her...

Im a POB bride also and I was also taken back by how much my alterations are costing me. So far I've paid 600, for a hem, a bustle, and to have it taken in. So far I've only had 2 fittings. We we'll see what the third will cost.

I swear, if they try to charge me AGAIN at my second fitting I am going to go berserk. This is just totally nuts. I just spoke to the assistant manager, she was very sweet and nice but basically said 'this is the way POB does their alterations, a la carte style, we have a standard price list and based on the style of the dress we charge appropriately within the range of prices, etc' She's going to talk to her manager about it and get back to me tomorrow...great. I can hardly wait. Argh.

Re: Are you kidding me?
I think $700 is waaaaay too much. I would take the dress elsewhere!!! I'am sure it will come out just as good for less money!

I thought about that. If, when she calls me back tomorrow, she won't give me some of the money back I'm going to tell her I don't want them to alter it and that I'll go pick it up and take it someone else to alter and see what she says. She'd probably still want to charge me for the train removal, 200 bucks for three minutes of snip, snip. And then what if the other seamstress elsewhere effs it up? Then I have no recourse through the bridal shop to make sure I have a dress for the day, KWIM? Also, I live in a TINY apartment with two cats and have no one local I can store it with. Was sort of counting on having the dress at the store right up until the day. oh well. We'll see what she says tomorrow.

That is a lot of money for a fitting especially if you are not making major changes to the gown.

Re: Are you kidding me?
Honestly, I'm paying $500 for alterations at Priscilla of Boston and I was told that when I bought my gown. When I met with the seamstress they told me it was $150 for the hem, $150 for the bustle, $100 to take it in, and $100 for the bow/sash/ribbons. I was prepared for that. Kleinfeld's alterations are the same or more.
