Are you kidding me? UPDATE!

Are you kidding me? UPDATE!

Went for my first fitting yesterday and the bill came to $700....

My dress is totally simple, no lace, no beading, just an empire waist sort of 'goddess gown' from Priscilla of Boston and they charged me 200 bucks just to cut off the 6 inch train! It took her literally 3 minutes to take scissors to it and chop it off while I was standing there in it. Does this seem ridiculous to anyone other than me?!?!

UPDATE! Thanks again to everyone who responded to my post. I just got off the phone with the store and they're doing NOTHING for me. They offered to knock off 10 percent of the cost of cutting off the train, a whole 20 dollars. That's just a wonderful discount off of 705 dollars.... Great. Thanks. So now I have to decide whether to just get screwed here and let them do it or take it elsewhere. I don't know what to do. Suggestions?

I was very happy with my Priscilla of Boston experience up until this point. Now I am p i s s e d and you'd better believe they will NOT get a good review from me when this is all said and done.

Oh no, I'm not happy to hear that. I got my dress from POB and have my fitting next month. I guess I should get ready to shell out the moolah

That is insane!!!! Mine came out to $200 total and I thought THAT was $$$... Where did you get your dress altered???

Re: Are you kidding me?

I'm glad to hear that you guys think it's ridiculous too. I bought it from Priscilla of Boston and am having it altered there too. I'll try to post a pic of it here so you can see how simple it really is. We're having an afternoon wedding so I wanted a semi understated not-too-formal gown and I love it but am suddenly not loving the price tag!!!!!

What do you mean by a cap? It was actually supposed to cost 300 bucks to cut off the train but she 'cut me a deal' (ha!) and knocked 100 off of it. Then it was another 200 to hem it, 125 to take up the shoulder straps, 150 to take in the side seems and 30 to sew in bra cups. Seems like a bit much huh? Seriously, my dress has no special detailing, i wonder if it costs WAY more for detailed dresses or if I just got the flat rate, which i think totally stinks because it clearly won't take as much time to alter my dress as it would one with a lot of detailing, right? Ugh. I feel like I've been robbed or something. I'm thinking I might call and complain to a manager today or something.

Re: Are you kidding me?

A cap means, that the seamstress (sp?) doesn't charge anymore after a certain amount of money.
My dress for example, their was a $450 cap on it. Unfortuatly I paid $450 for my alterations but if I didn't need that much work done to my dress I could have paid less money. You should ask your place if their is a cap on alteration. I would deffinatly call this place up today cause $700 is a bit much. You could get a whole new dress for the price. Is it too late to go somewhere else????

I definately think you should call and complain. I got my Melissa Sweet there and they had to hem it, which was really complicated because fo the detail on the skirt, and they are putting cups in, and my alterations were no where near that price!

that's UNBELIEVABLE!!! i don't even know what to say. they don't cap their alterations? mine is capped. why in the world are they charging you so much?!??

Re: Are you kidding me?

that seems excessive - my alterations were capped at 450, plus I had a dress with a lot of lace and beadwork and it needed to be taken in throughout the entire top and hip area, plus we had to do a bustle.

Re: Are you kidding me?

Thank so much ladies for your responses. And thank you ace730 for letting me know that yours wasn't near that much to alter. My gown is from the Vineyard Collection which I think is supposed to be their lowest priced line of gowns. I only paid 1080 for the gown and they want me to pay 700 for the alterations?!?! Unfortunately they don't open until 11 today but you better believe I'll be calling at 11:05 to start b*#$%ing! I'll let you know what they say....!

Well GL - your gown is gorgeous but there is no way those alterations should be costing you almost as much as the dress!

Re: Are you kidding me?

Did they give you a cap for the alterations on your recipt?

Mine is maxed at $225!! And thats including my bustle points!! Only thing it doesn't include is if I decide to make it into a sweetheart.

I would so talk to them about it. Thats just rediculous and completely not fair to you at all!!

Re: Are you kidding me?

$700 seems VERY high for the type of gown you are describing. If they had to add boning, rearrange beading, etc, I could understand... but to lift straps and hem? I would talk to the manager maybe.
