Are you kidding me? UPDATE!

Original post by tiffanygagnon

Went for my first fitting yesterday and the bill came to $700....

My dress is totally simple, no lace, no beading, just an empire waist sort of 'goddess gown' from Priscilla of Boston and they charged me 200 bucks just to cut off the 6 inch train! It took her literally 3 minutes to take scissors to it and chop it off while I was standing there in it. Does this seem ridiculous to anyone other than me?!?!

UPDATE! Thanks again to everyone who responded to my post. I just got off the phone with the store and they're doing NOTHING for me. They offered to knock off 10 percent of the cost of cutting off the train, a whole 20 dollars. That's just a wonderful discount off of 705 dollars.... Great. Thanks. So now I have to decide whether to just get screwed here and let them do it or take it elsewhere. I don't know what to do. Suggestions?

I was very happy with my Priscilla of Boston experience up until this point. Now I am p i s s e d and you'd better believe they will NOT get a good review from me when this is all said and done.

Mine is about $500 but it has a lot of lace on it. I had to take it in 2 sizes, hem about 8' and bustle! Basically a new dress!

I haven't had alterations done yet but my dress itself is only $720 (and it's beautiful and not some cheap piece of C^%#) - that sounds INSANE!

so weird that they didn't cap the alterations, most bridal stores if you buy the dress there and get alterations there, then they cap your alterations. meaning it can't go past that price no matter how much work you get done to it.

I'm not surprised. I am paying over $600 but I rhink they charge more based on the designer

I think someone posted on here that Bridal Reflections did their alterations even though they didn't purchase the dress there?

Try calling them maybe and explain whats going on.

I really don't think you should spend almost as much on alterations as the dress, seems silly to me.

Re: Are you kidding me?

Let me just say this.....I got my dress at KLIENFELD'S... although they get mixed reviews... everyone knows the rumor about their prices!!! They really can be very $$$$$$$ BUT... my alterations WITH BUSSEL INCLUDED are $500!!!! That's it!! Now that would include taking anything in. I do want to add some crystals and I want to sweetheard the neckline (which will be $75). So your alterations are officially more than mine and mine is from Klienfeld's! So yea, I would TOTALLY say that is a but much and also ridiculous! I would have started looking into other places to take the dress for alterations. No one likes to feel ripped off!

Edit to add that my dress is also entirely lace and beads.

I think $700 is waaaaay too much. I would take the dress elsewhere!!! I'am sure it will come out just as good for less money!

I thought about that. If, when she calls me back tomorrow, she won't give me some of the money back I'm going to tell her I don't want them to alter it and that I'll go pick it up and take it someone else to alter and see what she says. She'd probably still want to charge me for the train removal, 200 bucks for three minutes of snip, snip. And then what if the other seamstress elsewhere effs it up? Then I have no recourse through the bridal shop to make sure I have a dress for the day, KWIM? Also, I live in a TINY apartment with two cats and have no one local I can store it with. Was sort of counting on having the dress at the store right up until the day. oh well. We'll see what she says tomorrow.

If you really shop around and post about it I'm SURE you can find a place to alter it. Someone even mentioned that they heard Bridal Reflections does alterations even if you didn't buy your dress there... so at least that's a start.

Hopefully when they see that you are unhappy with the price... rather then letting you walk and losing out on money they will try to keep you. Good Luck! Keep us posted!

Re: Are you kidding me?

Alterations are super expensive. I am being charged 475 for a hem, a tuck in the chest area, and adding a panel in the back to make it come up higher. Although, I have to say, I would not want to attempt a single stitch of the work myself on the dress, so I am pretty happy.

Thanks for all of your advice ladies! I'm supposed to hear back from the manager of POB today sometime about the price. If I can get them to come down a bit I'll stick with them. if not, I'll take it elsewhere.

THe thing I'm concerned about going somewhere else with though is this: what if the someone else screws it up, I dunno, rips it, stains it, cuts it too short, I dunno. I feel like POB would probably not be at all helpful in that situation and i would be stuck. Where i feel like if one of their own seamstresses messed it up, I could say, 'look, YOU messed it up, YOU owe me another/new dress. Does that make sense? have you ever heard anyone say that their dress got messed up during alterations and needed to be replaced, etc?

I don't want to get screwed by these guys but I'm nervous about going somewhere else with it too. sigh. i don't know what to do.

Re: Are you kidding me? UPDATE!

i didnt need mine altered but my mom got her dress at davids bridal and the dress came to 120 give or take and they wanted to charge her 80 to 100 to alter it. all they had to do was take up the bottom of the dress which wasnt hard..no beading or anything plain bottom and fix the straps....my mom had them do the bottoms and did the top herself and the dress was fine. but they are outrageous. if we arent spending enough on our weddings.
